"A way through the sea..."
06/23/2003

"Thus says the LORD, Who makes a way through the sea And a path through the mighty waters." Isaiah 43:16 NAS

Life is a sea and it can be fun to splash in and swim in. It can an excellent adventure and feel like you are skiing on a calm wake in the early morning hours. It can be fun to hang out in it. It can be refreshing on a hot day. This sea of life we live can be filled with adventure and bright colors. There is so much to see and learn and so little time to see it all. The sea can also be a very dark unknown. It can be very turbulent and the waves can crash over our lives leaving us shipwrecked.

We may even feel like we are on the bottom of the sea. How do we make it in this sea of life we live in? Some days we might feel like we are floating on the top of the sea in cruise liner. Other times we might feel like we are just treading water. Even still other days we might be grasping for air to stay afloat. Right now where would you rate yourself in this great big sea? No matter where you are at, one thing is for sure, it can change over night.

It can be calm one minute and stormy the next. It can also be stormy one minute and clear blue skies the next. What we need is a way through the sea. We need the compass of life, our eternal GPS system to guide us through the dark times and bright calm times. Praise the Lord and give Him all glory for He has given us a way through the mighty waters. There is only one problem though. Do we take His way through or take our own way.

When I was a kid I was known as a know it all. If you asked or if you didn't I was ready to tell you the way, my way that is. We have our own way and sometimes we allow our own way to be more important than God's way. Thankfully God's way is always the right way, and His way is trust worthy. If your like me then sometimes it takes a while to get that truth through to a thick head. Also His way never changes even though our ways do. His way is constant and consistent with who God is, perfect.

That is why we need to constantly evaluate our way vs. God’s. We should always be asking the question: "Lord is this your will for my life?" Some may think that is it petty to bother God with the small stuff. That is absolute non-sense. Jesus is concerned with every area of our lives, even the smallest details. His will is for our every way. When the sea seems deep and the waves are crashing with the drama of life He will always provide a way of escape (1 Cor 10:13). Why then do we insist so often on trying to do it on our own?

The sea of life is hard enough without His Holy Spirit guiding us. Again it comes to that word so often used in these devotionals, that is, surrender. If we are living a surrendered life then we are looking to live in God’s way. Are you looking to live in God’s way or do you find your way as the thing that takes direction in your life. One thing seems always true. Our way leaves us wayward and adrift in this great big sea of life. What we need is to constantly look toward the one who has the perfect way through the sea who knows perfectly the path in front of us even though it may seem like mighty waters.

Surrendering Daily,
Adam

It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
