"He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power." Isaiah 40:29 NAS
Do you ever just feel completely weary? You might be weary from your day, weary from your week or just weary from your life. Do you ever have weeks that you are weary and tired? Last week for me seemed to be a weary week. Weariness weighs down the heart. Do you feel weary right now? You can feel weary from allowing the past to rob your present joys.
You can feel weary from your present situation robing your strength and taking your focus off Christ and putting it on yourself. You can be weary from worrying about the future. Sometimes we spend too much energy wearying ourselves instead of trusting it all to Christ and allowing Him to be our strength. The Hebrew word for weary is ya` eph (yaw-afe';) and means fatigued; figuratively, exhausted. The KJV uses it as faint or weary (1).
It comes from the root word ya` aph (yaw-af') meaning to tire (as if from wearisome flight) (1). We usually become wearisome from two sources. We become weary from internal affairs of the heart and also by external circumstances usually called life. Have you ever said the saying, “I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Well I sure have and it was the truth. Being weary can affect your day-to-day life in a very negative way if not directed to the Lord. King David was very much acquainted with being weary.
In Psalm 6:6 it says, "I am weary with my sighing; Every night I make my bed swim, I dissolve my couch with my tears (NAS)." Again in Psalm 69:3 it says, "I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; My eyes fail while I wait for my God (NAS)." Being weary can be very discouraging to our hearts. It can also be very depressing and the heaviness might seem like more than we can bear. Too often we wait in our own strength and hold on too long in our weakness.
The Lord waits for us to bring our weary souls to Him so He can strengthen and empower us to accomplish all that He has for us. We need to be reminded that in Philippians 4:13 it says, "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me (NAS)." Jesus Himself told us in Matthew 11:28, "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest (NAS)." How often we forget to claim the promises we have in Christ.
We forget that the Holy Spirit indwells us and empowers us when we are weak. It is in these times that being in the word is so important. The apostle Paul was definitely aquatinted with what it meant to be weary, weak and faint. In 2 Corinthians 12:8-9 it says, "And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me (NAS)."
We should stand on the strength of Christ and His power to persevere during the weary times. Even during the times when it feels like we are barely able to crawl up to the feet of Jesus. Maybe you are weary with sighing and make your bed swim with tears of exhaustion. Today look back to the one who increases power. Put your eyes aright toward heaven and rely on the strength that only comes through One, that is Jesus Christ. Remind your heart of that when it is faint.
Oswald Chambers says, "Exhaustion means that the vital forces are worn right out. Spiritual exhaustion never comes through sin but only through service, and whether or not you are exhausted will depend upon where you get your supplies (2)." Have a powerful week in His strength and only His strength. Fix your eyes on the power supplier of your soul.
Only Through Him,
Adam
It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
