"The grass withers..."
04/04/2003

"A voice says, "Call out." Then he answered, "What shall I call out?" All flesh is grass, and all its loveliness is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, When the breath of the LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass." Isaiah 40:6-7

Here in the metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona the heat is intense during the summer. Some from the East Coast part of the country love to throw around that saying, "Yea, but it's a dry heat." Which is absolutely true for sure, it is definitely a dry heat. Blow dryers are a dry heat but you don't want them on your face making it all chapped and dried out. I like to contend with the dry heat thinkers. Now I can say that because parts of my family lives on the East Coast, so of course it’s true J.

One of our hot summer days though just feels so hot. Now anyone who has been to the Phoenix area will attest to the fact of how hot it seems to be. Now you can imagine how it would feel to be a piece of grass in 116' degree heat in the shade and however much it is on the ground. Needless to say plant life can be short without proper watering and care here. This verse compares our oh so finite flesh to the grass that withers and the flower that fades.

No matter how nice we look, how successful we think we've become or how many other grassy friends we think we have, the fact is we will fade, whither and dry up. It says, "All flesh is grass". Due to our hot desert summer climate and our pretty cold winter’s people usually put down summer grass and then they re-seed for winter grass. No really it does get chilly here for us. Believe it or not I have actually scrapped ice off my windows with one of those AOL install CD’s that come in the mail. They make for very handy ice scrappers.

Now like grass we are born into this cold world and sprout up among all the other grassy people who sprout up for each of our generations. We come into this world with ambitions to be a lush green grassy field that can bring enjoyment to the world. We are brought into this world under different climates to live, speaking of our home life. The Lord brings people into our lives who bring us the good fertilizer of eternal life. We ether accept that life giving food for our grassy souls or we reject it.

Whatever we do with it will determine our final outcome as grass. For us who receive it there is eternal life for us. When we whither and fade we will only whither from this earth and go on to be with the great and mighty Savior Jesus who tends to us and makes us beautiful and lush. Until then here on earth, as we grow in this short season called life, there comes times when we need to be cut almost to the root so that we will have new growth. Some times we need a good sharp lawn mower to go over us.

This allows us to get rid of the dead grass in our lives and produce new pastures for Him. This allows us to flower and plant more seeds for His glory. We know some will not choose the eternal life fertilizer. What if someone chooses not to get the eternal life fertilizer? They will not produce any heavenly pastures. Anything they grow will be like weeds with no root instead of lovely soft green grass. They may look like a successful lawn of plush green, but it is all a short show that will be scorched in the end.

They will whither and then be thrown into the fire and be burned up. If you have lived one day you realize that life can feel like the intense Phoenix Arizona heat scorching down on you. We may feel like we have cattle grazing on us all day consuming us and trampling all over us. Thankfully we have one thing going for us. We have strong roots in Christ. He will always be here to keep us growing in Him. He will always tend to us and restore us to beauty.

Do you ever feel like you have been trampled on? Ever feel like life is grazing on you and you are being consumed? Ever feel like life is just scorching you? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions then take heart you're not alone. This life will pass us by before we know it. Our flesh will whither right before us. Like young bright flowers we will become wilted and dust once again.

So remember two things. Always remember that James 4:14 says, "Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away (NAS). Also remember that since you are yet a vapor that appears for a little while to make the most of sowing and growing for Jesus. What you sow today may be reaped tomorrow through the next generation of grass to grow.

The impact you have on ones heart may be like the permanent grass stain on those favorite jeans of yours. Just like the fact that the soiled grass stain may change the use of those pants, we may change the course of someone’s life through Christ. Also be sure to stay watered in His word. Just like grass that fades with out water so our lives will prematurely wither if we are not taking care of our souls by having them watered by the His word.

If you will commit to watering your heart with His word then you can be sure that other grassy people will come to know and believe in Jesus, the fertilizer of the our grassy souls. As in everything in life, there is a season. So use this season as a lovely grassy person to rub off on someone else’s life. Live your life in such a way that people run to you like kids running to play in a grassy field. You will be blessed and blossom for His glory. I hope you have a very green grassy blessed weekend.

Growing in Him,
Adam

It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
