"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus." Philippians 1:5-7 NAS
In the last devotional we talked about how God is constantly at work in us until the day when Christ returns and takes us home. We looked at our hearts as construction zones that have the sign’s up, “God at Work.” One thing you would see if you looked into our hearts as a construction zone, a constant work in progress might be a lot of traffic congestion. Whenever there is a lot of traffic in a construction zone it can get very congested and even come to a stand still. This is true in our hearts as well.
Sometimes we need to have our freeways shutdown for much needed repairs. Have you ever noticed the digital signs on the freeway letting you know that on such-a-such date at such-a-such time the freeway ramp or a certain amount of lanes or even the entire freeway will be closed for repairs? There are times when we need to be temporally shut down for repairs. It is in those times that we can get much-needed repairs to the potholes in our hearts from over congestion of all the traffic in our lives.
It gives us time to get the cracks in the road repaved. The Holy Spirit can really work in us if we will just give him the time to work on the areas that need repaving or to be rebuilt. When we constantly allow traffic on the roads of our hearts we may see the results of deterioration or finally we may become unusable for Him. Are you taking time to allow the Lord to do work on your heart without all the traffic of our lives causing congestion?
If you feel like your full of potholes then allow His Holy Spirit to repair them and fill in your Heart so that traffic can flow smoothly again. Remember the sign says, "God at Work". So don’t try to make it say, “Men at Work.” If you need to have new pavement put down in your heart then He may do a total closer to make you ready for His use. This could mean that God might have to remove the old pavement and resurface the area.
Whenever there is one of those large construction trucks grading the road and preparing it for the new asphalt, there always seems to be a water truck driving around giving moisture to the ground and keeping the dust down. When the Father is doing a work in us, then the Holy Spirit is there watering our hearts to make them soft and keep the worries of life down. Remember when God sees you He sees the perfect result of all the construction He is doing in your life.
Whether He is just patching potholes or repaving the entire road of your heart, He always sees the perfect end result in us because of Christ's atoning death on the cross. When we go through major construction we can not always see the end result until months even years later when it is completed. How sweet it is to see the finished work that started with big trucks and little nails to turn out as a beautiful building or decorative widened freeway with more lanes for more traffic.
If you have an outlook such as this and remember that we are all a work in progress then it will allow you to be more understanding for those around you who are also “Under Construction.” You will have more grace for your brother or sister the next time you approach them and they seem like a congested construction zone. Remember like you they also are created in the image of God and are a constant work in progress till the day of Christ Jesus.
What a glorious day that will be. The work He started in all of us He will be faithful to complete in all of us. This is true even if we are at different stages in our construction projects. You will find that you will come across those who are going through something that the Lord a has already worked out in your life. This gives you the ability to encourage them in the progress of construction they are going through. Be ready to put on your hard hat and be a worker for the Lord in the construction zone of a friend.
In the end all the glory goes to Him and how awesome it will be to look back and see how the Lord used you in that person, a work in progress. May you be blessed as you seek Him knowing that the sign says, "God at Work" in your heart.
Constant Work in Progress,
Adam
It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
