"Be of the same mind..."
10/15/2002

"Now may the God who gives perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus; that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 15:5-6 NAS

Here is something that can make churches fall apart if not guarded against. They fail to be in one accord, having different minds according to the flesh. Sometimes it can be so hard to be of the same mind with one another can't it? We all agree with the last part of the verse 5 "...according to Christ Jesus." Do we strive to live in one accord that way. For us to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ, we have to do it in the perseverance and encouragement only the Father gives. We are so hard headed some times and get so caught up in our way of doing things.

Even with regards to fellowship and the scripture. Thankfully the scriptures do not change according to our feelings. It always lead us in the way in which we should go, how we are to love and respond. It can take a lot of perseverance to be of one mind, of one accord. Have you ever thought about how much patients our heavenly Father has with us? He has infinite long-suffering with us. He of course pours out to us the ability and strength to be in one accord. We don't always have to agree with one another, but we want to always be of the same mind and in one accord regarding the focus and direction of God's will.

The world certainly notices when we are not in one accord. In fact I have heard that very statement, "If there is only one interpretation, then how come there are so many churches out there?" Being in one accord is to be united in purpose. Our purpose as believers is to spread the gospel to a lost and dying world. God does not have us categorized by church name. He does not see us as Baptist, Lutherans, Methodists, Calvary Chapels, etc. etc. He does not see us as protestant or catholic. He sees us as one accord, intent on one purpose: Going out and making disciples of all nations (Matt 28:19). He sees those who love His son as saints and those who don't as sinners. We have either been born again and sealed in Jesus or we are sinners who will die in our sins.

We are to have the same mind and be in one accord and that involves some sacrifices on our part. It involves laying down the small stuff that has no eternal value. Of course I am not talking about basic, scriptural foundations. I am also not talking about laying down doctrine that goes against the word itself and chooses man made traditions instead. There is no ecumenical joining here. We can never be of one accord and have one mind with doctrine that goes directly against God's word. This is where wise godly discernment comes in. What is necessary is to get along in Christ. It does not mean dropping your convictions, but it means putting others first before you.

Some things are not worth letting come between us as believers. What is our main goal? It is to see those we love and meet come to know Christ as their Savior. How do we succeed in accomplishing that goal? We are to be of the same mind, that is to be intent on the same purpose in Christ. It is to be of one accord, that is to be united in and through Christ. That is the only way we can be united in one accord, with one voice. Only through His perseverance and encouragement that He grants to us for His glory. Our mind set should always be looking to have all that we do, be to His glory.

So even being in one accord is to His glory, because we in our own strength will certainly not be of the same mind. It is a laying down of rights and privileges for the blessing of our brothers and sisters in Christ. This has and still is a life long lesson for me. There is a time and a place to address issues we feel are conflicting. Issues we feel go against our grain. Sometimes in being with one accord the Lord grants us the perseverance to keep quiet and let Him speak His still small voice to that person we feel needs to change or let go of something. Then they come and tell you how the Lord has changed them or the way they think and you are struck in "awe" of His glory.

Then the result will be that you are in one accord with that person. You are with one voice glorifying our Father in heaven. Have you ever went to friend to ask for prayer on dealing with someone else. Only to have the Lord reveal to you that your the one who needs to change. Then that friend encourages you with a spirit of gentleness in how to change. Then you see and let the Lord change that area and the result is again being of the same mind, in one accord. It is so awesome to be in a church that is praising in one accord to our Lord.

Today make it your hearts goal to "...be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus; that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." Always keep your heart on Him for long-suffering and encouragement in those times when it is tough to be in one accord. Keep your eyes and hearts alert for the enemies attacks to take your eyes off Christ and put them on others. Have a blessed Tuesday.

In Him Alone,
Adam

It is my prayer that you would be encouraged in your day-to-day walk and that you would be in the word everyday.
