Before a child learns to read, he/she has to understand many other concepts, such
as:
- Book handling skills & print concepts (turn the pages one at a time, print
carries meaning, etc.)
- Reading is a way to gain knowledge. Children will be motivated to read if they have many pleasurable experiences
with books as infants, toddlers, and pre- schoolers
- Letters have names and sounds and those sounds can be manipulated
and rearranged to spell words

Looking at and talking about the pictures in a book or retelling the plot with flannel
board pieces, puppets or props promotes a deeper understanding of and connection to the story. It also promotes
oral language and vocabulary development.
