At 24 years of age Mary became the mother of George WASHINGTON in Wakefield, Westmorland Co, Va, February 22, 1732. George Washington descended from the Lancaster Ball Family through his mother, Mary Ball. Mary Ball was born in 1708 to Joseph Ball and Mary Montague Johnson. Her father died only a few years after his daughter was born. Mary's mother remarried a man named Richard Hewes. By 1721, when Mary was only thirteen, both her mother and stepfather had died. Colonel George Eskridge, a close family friend was appointed her guardian and Mary live at his home in Sandy Point, Westmoreland Co. Virginia until she married Augustine Washington. Mary met Augustine Washington when she visited her half brother Joseph Ball in Loudoun Co., Virginia. The two were married in 1731 at Sandy Point. Augustine's three children from a previous marriage made an instant family for Mary in her new home at Pope's Creek Plantation on the Potomac River. On the morning of February 11, 1731 Mary gave birth to a son and named him George after her guardian George Eskridge. Mary and Augustine would later have five other children. (As a young man George adjusted his own birth date when the 11 days were dropped from the calendar making it Feb. 22, 1731/32.) In 1738, Augustine Washington purchased Ferry Farm on the north bank of the Rappahannock River, opposite Fredericksburg. Four years later Augustine Washington died leaving Mary and nine children. She never remarried. In 1772, when Mary was 64 years old, George Washington purchased the house in Fredericksburg and moved his mother there to be closer to her daughter Elizabeth. Mary Ball Washington lived to see her son elected President but died later that same year.
