Raw v2#3RAW
Volume 2
Number 3

Originally released in 1991-- over ten years ago-- and long out of print, the third issue of the second volume of Raw-- the most respected comics anthology of the 1980s-- was also the last issue to be published.   Edited by art spiegelman and Francoise Mouly, every issue of Raw features a table of contents chock-a-block full of all-star contributors, and this issue is no exception.  Starting off with a cover by R. Crumb, it  features work by Ben Katchor, Lynda Barry (a classic!), Kim Deitch (a 41-page graphic novella), Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Kaz, Gary Panter, Muñoz and Sampayo, Drew Friedman, and many more.  Like most issues of Raw, it also includes the original appearence of a chapter of art spiegelman's Maus, in this case the penultimate one.  There are also a selection of paintings by African (Zaire/Congo) painter Cheri Samba  and a unique and unusual collaboration between Alan Moore (Watchmen, From Hell) and Mark Beyer (Agony).  The best thing about this issue may be the Krazy Kat reprint.  Originally running from May 15 through July 16 of 1936, the story-- here dubbed, "Tiger Tea"-- consists of 48 consecutive daily newspaper strips and is, according to the brief introduction by Bob Callahan, the only significant continuity (i.e. sustained narrative) ever produced by Krazy Kat's author, George Herriman.  But what is most significant about this issue is that it contains Thrilling Adventure Stories, the breakthrough work by Chris Ware.  It was with this six-page piece that Ware first truly realized his artistic vision.  It is the seed out of which grew his masterpiece, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth.

While the price on an item like this obivously varies* from place to place, it is fairly safe to assume that few if any stores are offering new copies for sale at the original cover price of $14.95.  The serendipity of our warehouse find, however, allows us to offer all our new, unread copies of Raw Vol. 2 No. 3 for 10% below the original 1991 cover price, while supplies last.

SORRY, but we've finally SOLD OUT!

We're leaving this page up for the time being, just to keep you hep.
