The major cards of the Tarot consist of potent archetypes. An archetype is a model or pattern that is universal to
the human experience. It also conveys significant energetic influences to and from the unconscious mind. Archetypes are part
of the universal or collective unconscious. They effect us in many ways on many levels of our being, whether we are conscious
of them or not. They appear in our thoughts, dreams, fantasies, and stories. They manifest in our behavior and in the people
and situations around us.
Archetypes are represented by symbols. Some archetypes are characterized by
human forms, such as the Great Mother, the Fool, and the Warrior. Achetypal symbols also take the form of objects such as
the Wheel, the Cross, and the Tree. We can see these figures appearing over and over in Nature's creations as well as in our
human creations.
It is helpful for us to be aware of how the archetypes work through us, so that we can understand these forces without
allowing ourselves to be overcome by the archetype. When we identify too strongly with an archetype it overtakes us in thought
and behavior.
An archetype has both a positive and a negative side. For example, the Devil card in the Tarot is often viewed as a
negative influence in a reading. However, it does have its positive side, because it shows us aspects of ourselves and our
lives that we need to be aware of and either change or integrate. At the same time, a card such as the Star traditionally
has a positive connotation. Yet, it too has its negative side in that it may telling the seeker that they are setting their
sights too high, or that they are dreaming of a goal that they are not following through on.
It is fun and enlightening to discover
the Tarot and how to use the cards for self-awareness and decision making.
