Here are some ways to use my books in the classroom:Cornhusk, Silk and Wishbones
Have students interview their family members about their traditions. Then have them make a doll that reflects their ethnic heritage, write about it and present it to the class.

- Encourage the class to ask questions about the doll.
- Take photographs of dolls and make a class book.
- Hang a map on a bulletin board and pinpoint where the dolls come from.
- Students can also write about an adventure their doll might have.

This book can be used in a unit on careers, friendship and multicultural studies, or geography.
- Students can illustrate the poem about the pava, like Kate did.
- Students can write a friendly letter to Kate, Rosa, or Rosa’s daughter.
- Students can answer the prompt “If you were to give one of your possessions to a needy child in another country, what would you give? What would you tell them about it?”.
- Students can look at books about the people, plants and animals of Guatemala.
I love to hear from teachers on how they use the book. For more information (or questions or comments or suggestions)
