ENGRAVINGS ON EACH STONE

Left side

The quarter mile horse race track should be an icon in itself during this period.  It was bigger than the State Fair for the community and surrounding areas.

Center

In memory of the first three Alsup brothers to settle in Douglas County, Missouri: Ben, Moses Lock and William Newton Alsup.  Their father and grandfather along with their superior race horses trace back to Virginia in the 1700’s.  Many great race horses raced across the field from the starting line marked by two huge rocks in the foreground of this monument.  Many of the Alsup stallions and mares were the foundation bloodlines for many of the horse associations of today.  These same great horses from the Alsup line helped future men and horses get into the hall of fame and museums.  The track was a straight quarter mile from the rocks before this road existed.

Right side

In memory of Moses Alsup’s sons who also played an important role in the Alsup Horse industry in the later 1800’s.  Jack, Tom and Shelt Alsup

Many other ancestors of Douglas county were involved in these well known races as well.
