SUBJECT BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BOOKS AND DISSERTATIONS

The bibliography is an Excel file (2.39 MB) that can be saved to a disk or directly to your computer for local use. Download the Database. If it is not feasible for you to save the file from this source, contact me (address below) and I will try to email the database as an attached file. Alternatively, if you send me a Zip-100 disk or a writeable/recordable CD (with appropriate return packaging), I will copy the file and send it to you via US Postal Service.

NOTES ON THE BIBLIOGRAPHY

The bibliography is derived from the compilation since 1980 of new books and dissertations listed in History of Science in America: News and Views, the newsletter of the Forum for the History of Science in America. Currently there are about 7,100 citations in the database (citations for the nineteenth-century are at this site as a web document).

A subject heading has been assigned to each citation and some citations have a subheading. These sub-headings are not subjects in the usual sense, but are used to indicate the publication’s format, focus, or approach. In addition, each subject is assigned to a larger category in order to bring related subjects together. In its present form, the database is sorted by subject-subheading-citation (following Excel sort protocols, subjects with subheadings are filed before those on the same subject that lack subheadings). The lists of subject terms are separately available here: Subject Lists.

Following are several sample records from the bibliography illustrating the structure and content. In the bibliography entries, DAI = Dissertation Abstracts International.
