BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BIBLIOGRAPHIES,

GUIDES, AND REFERENCE WORKS

The (partially) annotated bibliography is divided into four categories:

         Bibliographies

         Biography: Dictionaries, Indexes, and Bibliographies

Encyclopedias, Chronologies, and Other Information Sources

Guides to Manuscript Resources and Special Collections

Each entry in the bibliography is identified as to national scope, i.e., whether it is specifically on American history or whether coverage is more general. Two points are warranted: (1) Many of the American sources are not limited to the 19th century and there are instances where only a minor part of a reference work may relate to that century because of the relative lack of development of the sciences at the time. These sources can be useful for what 19th century information they do include, and, of course, also can aid with earlier or continuing aspects of a topic or with other related subjects of possible interest to the user. (2) Many of the general works do not take heed of a national approach to the history of science and therefore identifying the American entries in a bibliography, for example, may require a degree of prior knowledge and/or persistence in scanning the content. The annotations ordinarilly are descriptive of the structure and special features of the book rather than summaries or critiques of the content.
