Cancer Treatment: Biological Therapy
Your own immune system is the
body's natural defense mechanism
against diseases, including cancers.
Biological therapy exploits the
immune system's natural defense
substances to repair, stimulate
or increase your's body's natural
ability to fight cancer, either
by using the natural substances
themselves or by using newly developed
substances that can imitate or
stimulate the natural defenses
of the body.
NCI:
Biological Therapy
Very good patient-oriented resource
explaining biological therapies,
from the National
Cancer Institute (NCI). See
also their related Biological
Therapies: Using the Immune System
To Treat Cancer factsheet.
Biological
Therapy
Very good overview: What is
biological therapy? How does biological
therapy work? What are examples
of biological therapies? What
are the side effects of biological
therapy? From the MedicineNet
Breast Cancer Center.
Immunotherapy
Cancer Treatment
Good overview of immunotherapy,
also known as biological therapy,
or biotherapy, with coverage of
interferons and other cytokines,
monoclonal antibodies, and cancer
vaccines. From Breast
Cancer Supportive Care.
Monoclonal
Antibody Therapy (Passive Immunotherapy)
Discussion of monoclonal antibody
therapy, considered a passive
form of biological / immunotherapy
because the antibodies are laboratory
produced, outside the body, rather
than by the immune system. Since
this does not require the immune
system to take an "active"
anticancer role, it can be effective
even if the immune system is weakened.
From the American
Cancer Society (ACS).
The
New Targeted Biological Therapies
This article covers gene therapy,
monoclonal antibodies, vaccines
and immunotherapy, and nnti-angiogenesis
factors. Excerpted from the book
by Musa Mayer, Advanced Breast
Cancer: A Guide to Living with
Metastatic Disease, by the Patient-Centered
Gudies: Breast Cancer Center.
