Practice area map (practice area maps will be available on Friday at the event center starting at noon)
The practice area is located at the far north end of Oak Mountain State Park.  To reach the practice area, continue on the main park road for 7 miles after entering the main entrance to the park.  Mile markers are located along the main park road.  You may park in the open gravel areas adjacent to the lake.  The practice map is intended to show you the open woods of Oak Mountain with its many winding ridges and re-entrants.  You will also see that there are many old logging roads that date back many years.  Most of them are very runnable and follow ridges or reentrants.  However, many are indistinct and may disappear and reappear.  You may run into some old logging roads that are not mapped.  Most of them are very indistinct.  You can see many old stumps throughout the park (especially the practice area) from when the park was logged in the mid 1900's.  Many of the old pine stumps have metal pieces attached to them for the collection of pine sap (before the trees were sawed down) which was used to make turpentine many years ago.  You may also run across some small areas of pine deadfall that are the result of pine beetles over the past years.  Most of these areas are very small and will not significantly hinder you.

If you would like a sample orienteering map of a section of Oak Mountain State Park, please send a Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope (SASE) to
