Food for Thought
by Darling Villena-Mata

A wise mother does not interfere with her child's life. Your chldren have their own process --their own thoughts, feelings, and reactions -- which must be allowed to unfold... If your childhood was painful, you may get overinvolved with your children's lives and smother them. Or you may find yourself forcing them to think and feel the way you do, to adopt all your values and live the life you wish you had.

Who was it that said that we are only guardians of our children's lives? In my family, both my parents were active in raising me, as were some of my extended family. Everyone who was an adult and who was around had the responsibility and the joy to be role models and guardians of the children who were present. Children are seen as gifts to be cherished, enjoyed, listened to, and guided in their journeys here on earth. My father was fond of saying to me when I was having difficulty in accomplishing something, "poco ha poco se camina largo." Bit by bit, one walks far. Patience, laughter, and faith that the pace one takes is appropriate.

Yet how often do we force our pace and our perception onto others? I heard the other day on PBS a show called "Donna's Day." I caught the tail end when she said, "What values are we teaching our children when everything is scheduled?"

My question to all of us is: Are we teaching doing is better than being?

On that note, I will stop here. Your comments are welcomed and will be posted to Letters to the Editor.
