On the Greene
by Maria Greene

The Scapegoat Generation

We stomp forward shouting foul,
Backing their generation against a wall
Of wounding fresh as hunters' kill,
Yet older than the thought of gun.

We think the weapon born with them,
The trajectory their making,
But the blast began so long ago,
The origin eludes a sighting.

Gunsmithers not, our parents.
Theirs an unconscious legacy
Sleepily passed hand to hand,
Across unwitting transgerational pain.

Though we may be the first
To wrench this gun away,
Our hands coming to know
If not yet able to control,

Peace in cycles broken
Comes only with compassion,
In knowing responsibilty versus
Blame they did not create.
