News Websites: Greensboro Sit-Ins
|
This news site was commissioned on the
30th anniversary of the Greensboro Sit-Ins. On February 1,
1960, after passing by Ralph Johns' store on Market Street,
Ezell Blair Jr. (Jibreel Khazan), David Richmond, Joseph McNeil,
and Franklin McCain entered the Elm Street Woolworth's at
4 p.m., purchased school supplies and "sundry" items. They
then approached the lunch counter and ordered coffee at 4:30
p.m. They were refused service. The four remained in their
seats until closing at 5 p.m. After several months of these
passive protests, on July 26th, 1960 the lunch counters at
Woolworths were desegregated.
In this design, I wanted to recreate the style of 1960s print
designs that would hold the design of a webpage. I drew inspiration
from simpler forms of calendars, business cards and some magazine
pages in the form of the more grid-oriented design they used,
the choices of typefaces, and the color schemes I found.
