Stories from my Youth
AKA My sordid past

I'm not going to blog here...but I will put stories here that I think of whenever I am reminded of something so strange it can't be fiction.

THE HAND CUFFS

(age 12--I think) Playing with a friend of mine (Galyn Nugent) I was showing him a set of handcuffs that my dad used to have when he was a truant officer. My friend Galyn thought they were pretty cool. In fact, with one hand he put one of the cuffs around his other hand.

My eyes got wide as he pushed them closed. He looked at me and said, "Where are the keys?" I replied, " I don't have any." Galyn said, "S*it, why didn't you tell me??". I replied, "I never thought you'd put them on. I wanted you to feel how heavy they are."

So, in my younger days, I was just as much as a McGyver (ok..mr. fixit...byt McGyver sounds cooler) as I am today. I took him out to the workbench and began to saw the handcuff off with a hacksaw. Well, if you know anything about saws and metal...one of the side effects is HEAT! Yeah...a lot of heat...well, he starts whining...yeah...it's my story...he's whining about how hot his wrist is. So, we go to the sink to spray water on his wrist to cool it off.

Of course, by this time, my mom and her boyfriend find out what is going on. My mom calls the police and says that her son handcuffed his friend and she needs them to bring over a key. The skeptical police show up and sure enough, their keys worked...I never saw those handcuffs again.

By the way, is it illegal to keep firearms in a safe deposit box at the bank?

A dream I had last night (9/14/04)

I dreamed that I could go back in time and start over from anyplace I wanted...but whereever I stopped I would only know about the one decision I changed. So, I went all the way back to high school senior year and dumped Pam. Then I drove to Springfield Illinois to hook up with Jamie. I had to vie for her affection...and finally got it. Then, all the knowledge came back to me of what results that change would have had on my life. I lost my job, my house, my wife, and Luke. And I told whomever was in charge that I'm ok with losing the house and job, but not Lollie and luke. So, just then I woke up, and saw luke laying next to me and I stroked his hair for a while and then came to bed to be with Lollie.

Dream with Dad

We went down to the Ozarks to clear the backyard of brush and as it turned out, all the chain saw blades were in my toolbox so we had to go get new ones. We went to get gas and we checked out the gift shop/marina store. Dad couldn’t get over all the different products and how inventive they were. Dad had a light bulb from the boat he was trying to replace and he couldn’t get over the poor quality of the replacement bulb. I told him that that is way things were now. Mom came in and said that she put gas in the car and the boat. Dad couldn’t get over how independent you were…pumping your own gas and stuff.

We went out to the yellow boat and underneath it there was a log splitter built into the bow. Dad said that he used it once on something other than a log and screwed up the engine.

He told me that with all the money that I put into this house that I could have bought a resort/marina in the Ozarks and done what I really wanted to do which was live there.

The images faded away and it was about 10 minutes before the alarm went off. I smiled and said bye Dad.
