Kaisers' Tail <tale>

This is an easy story to tell. Lollie and I were driving home from Chigaco where we saw a sign on an exit, "Animal shelter open house". Just then Lollie and I had talked about how much I missed THE SHADOWE and would like another Rottweiler. So, we took the exit and visited the animal shelter, where they had a 150 lb rottweiler named Bruce, I think. Bruce's owner moved and could not take him with him. He was a very friendly dog the size of one of those new VW Bugs. Anyway, Bruce helped Lollie and I decide that we really didn't want an adult dog, but a puppy.

So, that week, when we returned home Lollie suggested that I fill out an adoption request at our local shelter in case a dog should happen to come in. It was then that I wrote Shadowe's story on Pet's page.

When I was handing in my request, I was told that I had to see a sweet 10 week old shephard/Rott mix puppy. I can't remember her name. But she was just so adorable, I decided to adopt her. She was colored like a shepherd but shaped like a Rottie.

The next day when I came in to check on the puppy, there were two women looking at my puppy. I didn't mind because of course, she was not officially "mine" yet. When I walked in the girl behind the counter asks "did you will out the adoption form for a Rottweiler puppy?" I replied, "Yes, I did, and I am adopting <insert the female dog's name here>". She said, "There's something you have to see in the back." I looked at her discouragingly as she left the counter to lead me to the dog pens. "I'm not looking for a second dog," I said to help my case. What was she getting me into?

Well, she walked right past the dog pens through a door I had never been in before. In this room were tons of little tiny kittens. As I looked around the room, she said "this is where we keep the baby animals." She brought me around the corner to a couple more dog pens and said, "this is where we keep the sick dogs". Low and behold on his hind legs was a rottweiler puppy who was leaning against the cage door and howled a little puppy howl to announce our arrival.

The wonderful woman from the shelter explained the puppy's story as follows:
"This is a puppy we haven't named yet. There was a gentelman on our parking lot last weekend trying to give away two puppies from the back seat of his car. Our manager went out and scolded the gentleman who had already given away one flea infested, mangy puppy and confiscated the other one. This one."

To her, I replied, "You had me at 'this is a puppy...'" I told her that I would adopt this dog when he was ready and that I would name the puppy and cancel my adoption for the other dog.

I went back to the counter and the two women were holding the other dog I had applied to adopt. The girl behind the counter said, "Oh, here's the guy that's going to adopt her." Both women looked at me and said, "oh man...you're going to adopt <female dog name>? Can we have her, please". The woman explained that she was recently divorced and her ex got control of "their dog" which broke her heart. Her friend had suggested that the best way to get over it was to adopt another dog of her very own while starting her live over as a single woman.

To this I replied, "Do you really want her?" "Oh, yes, yes," she cried. I smiled and said to her,"If it will help you to have this puppy then you may have her." Tears welled up in her eyes and she hugged me.

So, the next day I went back to the shelter and tacked a piece of paper above Kaiser's kennel which read,"Hi, my name is Kaiser, I'm being adopted by Chris Frillman"

And now you know the rest of the story...
