Notes on names: The basic form is either Tsirlin or Tsyrlin, written in distinct ways in cyrillic. In Yiddish both become identical: Tsade-Yod-etc. Also, in Yiddish the Tsade may represent the cyrillic Ch, and Lithuanian Jewish pronunciation tends to mix the two sounds anyway. In Poland the C is used to represent the Ts. In transcriptions from the Hebrew Tz is common where transcriptions from the Russian would use Ts. In general Tsirlin and Tserlin are clearly distinguished in any alphabet - Yiddish/Hebrew, cyrillic, and even Latin (Western) - except in English, where the e is a schwa.
As a rule one finds Tsyrlin only in careful transcriptions from Russian texts, and one finds Cyrlin in Poland, at Ellis Island, and in the Yad Vashem database (more often as Cirlin, and equivalently as Tzirlin).
Note that when one finds Tsyrlin, it is definitely not Tsirlin, but when one finds Tsirlin, it may represent Tsyrlin
American forms vary widely, from Cherlin to Sirlin. Recent immigrants tend to keep spellings closer to the original, typically Tsirlin.
