Descended from Harry Chirlin, and Freda Bartz, both originally from a village near Druye in the Vilna guberniya, now part of Bielorussia.
Gary was born in Buffalo April 1, 1950. He is an engineer, a graduate of M.I.T. in 1972 and Ph.D. at Princeton University, an expert in groundwater pollution.
He married Kristi Johnson in 1974 in Bristol, CT and lives in Rockville, Maryland.
