Figure Reviews

Elite Rebel Trooper

Hit Points: 20
Defense: 13
Attack: +7
Damage: 10
Cost: 7

General description:
Rarely does a unit's attack come even close to its cost and in the Rebel faction only one unit's plus attack score is equal to the cost of the unit... the Elite Rebel Trooper

Uses:
You really want to use this unit on mass in 100-point teams. If your opponent is using higher cost figures you'll have a distinct edge... as you'll be able to fire twice as often (or more) than your opponent. That's more die rolls with a significant boost to attack, +7. In lower point games, 100-point teams, the impact of extra troops with good to hit abilities becomes magnified. In high point teams you're better off with Elite Hoth Troopers because of their better damage and defense, but in 100-point teams the extra figures you can buy can be a real edge.

Strategies and game play:
Use these Characters with a Rebel Officer and Princess Leia, Senator. The officer can up your hitting ability and with the Senator you can move up to a door, fire and then move (using Leia's extra movement) to move back... closing the door.

Combos with other miniatures:
This character works well with the Rebel Officer and Princess Leia, Senator

Ways to counteract it:
The bane of this character's existence is Darth Vader, Jedi Hunter. The ten point damage reduction of the Dark Armor makes the troopers 10 points of damage useless.

Strengths/Pros:
Best attack plus per cost for the Rebel faction (in other words, they are cheap, but they shoot well)

Weaknesses/Cons:
Low defense (needs cover) and low damage (only ten points)

Artwork and aesthetics:
If you look carefully, you can tell the difference between Rebel Troopers and Elite Rebel Troopers. The regular Rebel Troopers hold their hands together on their blasters, but the elite figures use a staggered hand hold (one behind the other)... a subtle and nice touch.

Overall rating (1-10):
I give this figure a rating of 8

Wedge Antilles

Hit Points: 70
Defense: 18
Attack: +9
Damage: 10
Cost: 22

General description:
Wedge’s one of the hardest characters to kill. He’s got a fair number of hit points and with his evade ability he ducks real good. He’s one of the most cost effective characters in the Rebel faction. As a leader he also helps to keep other characters alive. Most leaders help characters hit, but Wedge is one of the few who helps your team survive. Grenade troops are difficult to use effectively, because you have to get them up close to use them. But with Wedge around they have a much better chance to get within range and do some damage.

Uses:
Use Wedge to get your pilots into position to use grenades against masses of your opponent’s troops. If your opponent splits up to avoid bunching together, you can gang up on the resulting sub-teams and defeat your opponent piecemeal.

Strategies and game play:
Team one or two pilots with Wedge and send them after knots of enemy troops. Don’t get too close. You want to get just close enough to throw a grenade that can target more than one opponent. Shoot Wedge’s blaster when you attack. You will hit more often than Wedge’s grenade.

Combos with other miniatures:
Using a couple of pilots, Wedge and Princess Leia, Senator can make a strike and fade team. Move pilots forward, throw the grenade, then use the extra move from Leia to back off two squares and keep the pilots out of Jedi range… or at least force them to waste a force point to catch up to you. In large teams, where you have the points to spare, you might consider Prince Xizor and up everyone’s grenade attack to 20! Don’t let Xizor get too far away though or you’ll drop back down to 10.

Ways to counteract it:
Wedge is really hard to kill and just when you think you have him, he gets up again (Avoid Defeat ability). Use Sith to kill Wedge. You need to get up close and personal and whale away.

Strengths/Pros:
70 hit points, 18 defense and an Avoid Defeat ability… boy is this character hard to kill. As leaders go, the Commander Effect of Evade, although limited to who it can affect, it is never the less a powerful tool. Wedge’s Plus nine to hit is not to shabby either. Wrap that all up in one package that only costs 22 and you’ve got a great bargain.

Weaknesses/Cons:
Limited Commander Effect…you must use this character with pilots.

Artwork and aesthetics:
This figure looks almost exactly like the pilots. Although without his helmet, Wedge is easy to spot. I think the figure is an excellent example of making a distinctive character that has to wear a uniform.

Overall rating (1-10):
I give this miniature a rating of 9.

Admiral Ackbar

Hit Points: 70
Defense: 14
Attack: +4
Damage: 10
Cost: 21

General description:
Only three characters in the Rebel faction have double digit attack factors, the lowest of any faction, so the Rebel Alliance needs all the help it can get. Enter Admiral Ackbar. The admiral also has the ability to be a sniper team leader.

Uses:
Rebel Leaders are nice, but Ackbar’s bonus is better. Use the admiral to beef up your teams ability to hit. From time to time you’ll also face a character in your opponent’s rear that is killing you, but you can’t get at him because he has cover. Ackbar’s special ability of ‘It’s a trap’ can be used to allow troopers without abilities to target these pesky attackers. In general, you’ll want to keep Ackbar alive and in the rear, you need this attack plus. If he dies, your combat effectiveness is reduced.

Strategies and game play:
Use Ackbar with your troopers to score more hits. Keep him in the rear with the gear. Around a corner where he can’t be shot at is his best location. In larger groups, you might want to add a Rebel Officer as a backup. But if you’re short on points, just buy the admiral and lots of troopers.

Combos with other miniatures:
Use Ackbar with anyone that needs a bonus to hit. He works well with Wedge leading a grenade attack, while the admiral and his troopers blast away at anything that moves… even things that don’t move.

Ways to counteract it:
If he sticks his neck out, kill him, otherwise ignore him and kill his troopers. They can’t get any plusses if they are dead and Ackbar can’t defend himself, so he’s most likely hiding to keep from being shot.

Strengths/Pros:
Plus four to attack… a veritable bonanza for the Rebel faction.

Weaknesses/Cons:
Lower than average defense makes him easy to hit, and even though he has the same hit points as Wedge Antillies, he is far easier to kill. Unlike Wedge, this character cannot shoot (only the ‘B’ brothers - Bith and Bothans - shoot worse.)

Artwork and aesthetics:
He’s cute, in a fishy kind of way.

Overall rating (1-10):
I give this miniature a rating of 7.

Dressellian Commando

Hit Points: 50
Defense: 15
Attack: +5
Damage: 10
Cost: 14

General description:
The Rebel faction has several elite and commando characters to choose from, but on the commando front, the Dressellians hold the edge. In fact, Dressellians are so good that they almost make Rebel Commandos obsolete. First, commandos are too expensive for a faction to invest in large numbers of them, so by default you’re only going to have a few commandos. What you need is a commando that has plusses for being a loner and the Dressellians have just that. Now add to that the ability to sneak around and shoot for extra damage and you’ve got something. Compare this commando to the Rebel Commando. He has an equal defense point, but ten more hit points. The Dressellian has a slight edge already and they both cost 14. But the Dressellian can get bonuses from being by himself and if he stands still he does more damage. The only thing the Rebel Commando has going for him is grenades. Normally, unless you need the grenade ability, I’ll go with the Dressellian. Besides do you really want to spend 14 points on a character that has to advance within 6 squares to throw a weapon? Pilots or Bothans are a cheaper alternative.

Uses:
Trooper killer.

Strategies and game play:
Send this guy off by himself behind some cover. Let him sit there and pick off your opponent’s troopers. Stay behind cover. Don’t let the enemy close to hand to hand range. Fall back and keep shooting.

Combos with other miniatures:
Putting this unit with other units only negates his loner ability. He does benefit from some commander effects however, but don’t buy commanders just for the Dressellian. It’s not worth it.

Ways to counteract it:
Charge. He only has a 15 defense. Charge up to him and kill him, negating any cover benefits.

Strengths/Pros:
50 hit points. Better plusses to hit and damage than the Rebel Commando

Weaknesses/Cons:
Average defense. Weak attack and damage …unless he stands still behind some cover. What the game needs is a Dressellian Commando Sniper. I’d pay a few more points for that.

Artwork and aesthetics:
Not as cool looking as the Rebel Commando, but it’s not bad. It’s a fairly average figure.

Overall rating (1-10):
I give this miniature a rating of 6.
