CELESTIAL SEASONS AND THE TILT OF THE EARTH

after the first frost

fall is fleeting and faint in memory

yellow is the color of the forest in the fall

now it's winter white in Washington

a snow globe turned upside down

a cloudburst of feathers

from celestial pillow fights

the green is gone for good, it seems

birds appear in the fog

like apparitions

air traffic control keeps them from colliding into one another

white is the overcoat cold winter wears

but when spring springs,

it explodes like fireworks in the nation's capitol

on the 4th of July of an election year

like the Super Bowl halftime show

or a Kiss concert

like firecrackers popping on Chinese New Year

it's already started:

pink petals all over the ground

like confetti after a ticker tape parade

crimson crowns the flowers in spring

leaves appear magically

on a bare branch skeleton of bones

pale yellow and getting greener by the day

growing like baby chicks before your eyes

filling out

taking shape

becoming a glorious fountain of green

I awaken to birdsong

sending tweets around the neighborhood

the land responds with a symphony of green

sea green, forest green, emerald green

I drink it in with my eyes

"He maketh me lie down in green pastures"

grass sparkles with raindrops

when the sun peaks out

shining through luminescent leaves

the grass is greener

on both sides of the fence

green is the gown summer wears to the ball

it's 4 AM in the Northern latitudes

and already getting light

an owl sounds the hours

as his ancestors have done

for thousands of years

spotted owl in the brick-red barn

midsummer days are long

with cloudy light

the first leaf turns color

and reluctantly falls to the ground

it begins again
