"All the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened. And rain fell upon the earth forty days and forty nights". - Genesis 7: 11-12

"Rain likely in the morning...then showers likely in the afternoon."

rain, rain, rain
cold, cold, cold
it's raining cats and dogs
calicos and cocker spaniels
morning dawns into an all day twilight
in the Northern latitudes
come rain or shine
just weather the storm

"Precipitation: 84% Chance of Rain."

I hate to rain on your parade
but when it rains it pours:
it purifies the land, sanctifies the trees
and the land turns greengreengreen
it's raining buckets
it's raining rivers
it's raining sideways
it's coming down in sheets
in the Northern latitudes
pools of neon color reflect on the sidewalk
I drink in the rain
bathe in the sound
splash
my sox are wet
wet as a dog in the water chasing a duck
there's water in my shoes
they squeak with each step
sandals are useless up here
people ask if I have webbed feet yet
ha ha, quack quack
I've got a feeling I'm not in California any more

"Showers in the morning...then numerous showers in the afternoon."

there's no rain-checks in Washington
just go anyway:
have a picnic in the rain
wash your car in the rain
get married in the rain
lay out in the sun in the rain
hang out your laundry in the rain
take a shower in the rain
dry off in the rain
they don't know enough to come in out of the rain
in the Northern latitudes

"Rain this morning...then rain likely this afternoon.
Tonight rain likely in the evening...then periods of rain after midnight."

into each life some rain must fall
but every cloud has a silver lining:
the mountain is out, they say

when it's clear enough to see -
it's a rare occurrence like spotting the Aurora Borealis
or Haley's Comet
sun breaks, they call them -
brief respites from the downpour
like coffee breaks
when leaves sparkle and glisten in the sunlight
(we interrupt this program for a brief appearance from the sun
after which we will resume our regularly scheduled rain)
or like a fleeting moment when the pope appears in his palace
at the second window from the right
with a blessing and white dove
or when the Queen briefly appears on the balcony
with sun bonnet
waving her gloved hand
and proclaiming pithy platitudes -
"buck up and be strong for God and country"
or "they are most deceived that trusteth most in themselves"
God save the Queen...

"Rain the next 10 days...heavy at times."

it's quiet this morning
the uneasy calm before the storm:
dogs and animals can feel it
no real sunrise just the blue gray
of dawn that seems to last for hours
only to become an uncertain chalky white
the air is heavy and humid between storms
and soft to the touch
fog creeps in like a cotton ghost at Halloween
and rain moves in like a wet blanket
the sound is hypnotic like a Balinese gamelan
or the crickets in Africa
a curtain soothing the troubles of the world
so that children and sleeping dogs
can dream peacefully
of warm hugs and
summer days at the beach

"Sunny skies, highs in the 70's, beautiful (just kidding)...more rain for the next several days and on into the weekend."
