little ladies with blue hair

and flowered sunhats

smile, serving tea and crumpets

saying isn't this lovely?

yes quite lovely

lovely isn't it?

oh yes

quite!

they may as well have birds

nesting on their heads

chickadees perhaps

parakeets,

or the bluebirds of happiness

flowers line up like school children

ready to play

we love parties they say

a fireworks of flowers

explodes over the ocean

a fountain of flowers

overflows the stone wall

irises look down past my shoulder

with neither pride not pity

content with the moment

and their lot in life

there's a piper in the tower

I climb up to join him

sound wrapped in mist

like a muted fanfare

for the Fairy Queen

stone and green

rusting weathervane

no shadow on the sundial

in this garden or in Monet's

where color replaces development

"vague and intangible as the changing light of day"

and a raven stands sentinel

a harper summons the spirit of O'Carolan

sound seeps into my soul

music floats above us

like colored air balloons

or parachutes over a peaceful Normandy

abalone shells line the walk

on a pathway fit for the queen

the fog lifts and the day is blistering with brilliance

glimmering in the sun

I talk to the trees

nice to meet you, I say

nice place you have

do the neighbors give you any trouble?

the seeds of surprise lie under the earth

ready to burst into song and poetry

this afternoon is to be continued

I know some day I will go to Scotland

perhaps I will meet you there

on the path

saying isn't this lovely?

yes quite!
