    the past is a dream

         from which I awoke...

bunnies hop with ears upright

like rabbit ears of the 1950's

tuning in the Jackie Gleason Show

hawks soar around the curve of the hills

lush, still green at the end of April

the warm fire of friends that wish me well

such a treasure like that buried

beneath the waves that lap at my footprints

soon to be gone

it's the final fleeting footsteps

into fields of freedom

where I loose the chains of my own making

the unknown is a good place to be

free from the structures of inflexibility

that I create

the remaining days of an old life are auspicious

before the new one begins

a place to live and thrive

like the lupine that grows in summer

amid orange poppies

such a rich time between lifestyles

suspended animation in between clock ticks

floating on a cloud

buoyed by waves of friendship

where a ship was once lost at sea

now the seas inside me alternate

between high and low tide

and the wax and wane of the moon

songbirds sing a cheerful melody

farewell and Godspeed

the ocean has whitecaps and layers of color

the wind is brisk and the gulls agitated

putting on a display

gulls white as the whitecaps beneath

they could charge admission for this

I can hardly believe I am leaving this sanctuary

but as a friend said - I'm being called

a voice beyond my own hearing and understanding

comes through my heart

leads me into the unknown

where my work awaits

a journey begins with the first step

or in this case, turning the ignition in the car

this is like the migration of the California Dream

after World War 2

or the Okies moving west during the dust bowl

better days ahead

as I migrate to northern latitudes

soft light dark sky misty rain

where lilac and wisteria bloom

better days ahead

I emerge with the dawn

as a crescent moon rises in the east

bluebells stand beneath pines

like green parents with blue children

the surf is an echo in my memory now

...and so I leave
