I drive into the dawn in a pouring rain
glistening, glimmering, shimmering
silver sheets of water
drumming rhythms to the Pacific Northwest
raindrops like diamond icicles
twinkle from a pale streetlight
bare twigs are a batik of patterns
the veins of the earth against a bluish gray
dawn reluctant to awaken

Christ died to save sinners the sign says
a dead tire on the road
may you rest in peace
a street called Phantom Lane - how cool
who lives on Phantom Lane? - nobody

the sky is a simmering cauldron of contrast
the pines faint ghosts in the fog
mist hangs over treetops
like the puff of smoke from a cannon shot
barren trees are gray wolves
in a dead forest
the remaining leaves shudder from trees
like birds fluttering their feathers
flittering about
resisting the final descent
may you rest in peace as well
and the evergreen - veteran of many seasons
a wise elder proclaiming the continuity of life

for a moment the sun comes out
and grass dazzles like diamonds
the hills are a carpet of contour
shining through the musty smell of autumn mist
flames fan out red from the forest
brush fires of amber and gold
reach up from the floor
orange embers smolder in volcanic rocks
yellow shrubs sit at the foot of evergreens
like little Chihuahuas
wet leaves are fallen stars
in a tunnel of love
through the mountain pass

I see with new eyes
collect images like seashells:

    migrating birds form pointillist patterns
    in the chalky distance
an island of light floats across the sky
    I am surrounded by light
    luminous lily pads
grasses wafting like wheat in the wind
black pond in a golden prairie
    green and amber checkerboard fields

I drive into the dawn
and see with new eyes
