Will of Richard Bickham

Richard Bickham's will was dated 16 June 1660, and proved 7 July 1660, in London by his widow Thomazine Bickham.

In the Name of God Amen. the Sixteenth Day of June in the yeare of our Lord one thousand Six hundred and Sixty I Richard Bickham of Taunton in the county of Sommersett Clothier being weake in body but of good and perfect sense and memory (blessed bee God) doe make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme followeinge, first I doe humbly recomend my Soule into the hands of my gratious God who gave it mee and my body I bequeath to the earth from whence it came to bee decently buried Also I give unto the poore people of the parrish of Ouldcleeve in the said county Twenty shillings to be paid within three months after my decease Also I give and bequeath Five pounds more of lawfull money of England to bee distributed amongst such other poore people as my Executrix here after named shall thinke fitt within six months after my decease Also I give unto Aldred Bickham my sonne and to the heires of his body lawfully begotten my freehould messauge and tenement with the now buildings garden and appurtenances there unto belonging stituate lyinge and beinge in East Streete in the Towne of Taunton aforesaid which of lately were purchased of Thomas Lodgingrum and in case my said sonne Aldred shall happen to dye before hee attains his age of one and Twenty yeares without issue of his boddy lawfully begotten then I will and devise my said Freehold messuage and Tenement with the now buildings garden and appurtances there unto belonging unto Thomasyn my wife during her life, And after her decease I give and devise my said messuage tenement now buildings and appurtances unto my Brother Aldred Bickham and his heires forever upon condition that my said Brother Aldred and his heires doe and shall within one yeare next after the Deathe of my said sonne Aldred and my said wife pay or cause to be paid unto my sister Anne Dymont Fifty pounds of lawfull money of England, and unto my Sisters Johan Isott and Mary Bickham one hundred pounds a peace of like lawfull money of England And in case my said sister Dymont shall happen to dy before her said Legacy shall become due and payable, then upon condition and my will is that my said Brother Aldred and his heirs shall pay her said legacy of Fifty pounds unto such childe or children of my said sister Dymont as shall bee living at the time before herein limitted for payment thereof And in case it shall happen my said sisters Johan Isott and Mary or any or either of them to dye before the Legacies and bequests aforesaid shall become due and payable then upon condition also, and my will is that my said Brother Aldred and his heires shall pay the Legacy and Legacies bequest or bequests of her or them soe dying unto the Survivors or Survivor of them the said Johan Isott and Mary And my will is that my said Brother Aldred shall within three months after my death become boundon unto the rest of my Overseers hereafter named (hee being intended to bee and) in the sume of six hundred pounds conditioned for the payment of the legacies and bequests aforesaid when the same shall become due and payable according to the purpose and intent and meaninge of this my will And in case my said Brother Aldred shall refuse or neglect so to doe; then I give and bequeath my said Freehold messuage and tenement with thappurtenances imediately from and after the death of my said sonne Aldred (if he dye before hee attaine his said age of one and twenty years withou issue of his body) unto my said wife and her heires upon condition that my said wife and her heires shall in respect of my devise to her as aforesaid pay unto my said sisters Anne Johan Isott and Mary the severall bequest and bequests aforesaid amounting in the whole to three hundred and fifty pounds within two years next insueing after my said sonns death And whereas I have this day surrendered into the hands of the Lord or Lords of the Mannor of Taunton Deane according to the custome of the said Mannor my Copphold lands holdon of the said mannor lyinge at or neare Silver Streete within the parrish of Taunton Magdalene lately purchased of Mr West To and for such uses and purpose as should bee expressed limitted or appointed in and by my last Will and Testament now I do hereby expresse limitt and appointe and doe give and devise all my said Copphold lands with the buildings and appurtances there unto belonging unto my said sonne Aldred Bickham and his heires according to the custome of the said mannor upon condition that my said sonne Aldred and his heires shall pay out of and for the same unto my said wife Fifteen pounds of lawfull money of England yearely and every yeare during her life at the four most usuall quarterely dayes and times of payment by equall por'cons in lieu and satisfaction of her Dower or thirds which shee shall or may claime out of my freehold messuage and Tenement in Taunton aforesaid before given and devised unto my said sonne Aldred and his or the issue of his body And my will is that my said wife shall in consideration of the said yearely sume of Fifteen pounds before mentioned to bee paid unto her out of my said Coppehold lands and other bequests unto her in and by this will within three moneths next after my decease make seale and deliver unto my said sonne a good and sufficient release & discharge of her dower and tytle of dower of in and to my said freehold messuage and tenement in Taunton aforesaid And if shee refuse so to doe, I will my gifts and bequests herein to her shall bee voyde Also I give and bequeath unto my said sonne my best silver bowls And my will is that my said sonne Aldred Bickham shall dureing his life have also and enjoye my silver gilt salt and halfe a doezen of plaine silver spoones marked with the letters A.B. And that after his death the same shall bee had used and enjoyed by his oldest sonne and so from sonne to sonne by the oldest male of the line forever. And if my said sonne Aldred dye bearinge no sonne that then the same shall be had used and enjoyed by my brother Bickham and his oldest sonne and the oldest male of his line forever And whereas a Legacy of Five pounds was given unto my said sonne by Aldred Bickham his Grandfather deceased which I have receaved to his use, my will is that my said sonne in consideration of my bequests unto him in and by this my will shall at his age of one and twenty yeares (upon request) give a good and sufficient discharge in Lawe unto the Executors of the said last Will and Testament of his said Grandfather for and concerninge the said Legacie of Five pounds Also I give and bequeath unto all my brothers and sisters and to my Uncle Bradshaw and my Aunt his wife mourning rings of the value of fifteen shillings a peace to bee provided for them against my funerall And I intreat and appoint my Brother Aldred Bickham and my good friend John Cridland of Spaxton Gent [Martain ?] Dobble of Pitminster gent and Robert Procter of Honlade merchant to bee overseers of this my last Will and Testament And my will and desire is that my said Overseers or the Survivor or Survivors of them shall off sett and dispose of my said Freehold messuage and tenement with the appurtances in Taunton aforesaid as also of my coppihold lands before mentioned untill my said sonne shall attaine his age of one and Twenty yeares for his use and benefitt And I desire and intend all my said overseers to maintaine and educate my said sonne dureing his minority with the rents and profitts of my said freehold messuage and tenement and with what shalbee by them made and [unifed ?] out of my said coppihold lands (over and above the fifteen pounds yearely payable out of the same to my wife as aforesaid) and whatever plus thereof shall remaine in the hands of my said overseers or any of them I desire them to pay over unto my said sonne at his age of one and twenty yeares if hee bee then liveinge or otherwise to my said wife. And my will is that every one of my said overseers shall have a mourning ring of the value of fifteen shillings; And I give unto my said Overseers Forty shillings a peace as a thankfull acknowledgement for their care and paines to bee taken in seeing this my will duely and truly performed according to the true meaning thereof And I will and appoint that fair & reasonable and necessary charges in doing the work shalbee bound and allowed them by my said sonne upon accompt to him at his age of one and twenty years All the residue of my goods and chattells moneye and creditts my debts and legacies being paid and my funerall expenses discharged I give and bequeath unto Thamasyn my wife who I make and ordaine to bee the sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament In witness whereof to this my will written in three sheetes of paper I here sett my hand and selae the day and yeare first before written.
