Congregation Bet Haverim has launched a “One For Each Night” campaign to promote energy conservation through the sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). Each night of Hanukkah, after lighting the traditional Hanukkah candles, families are invited to install a compact fluorescent and learn about its benefits. Why fluorescent lights? Saving electricity generated from fossil fuels keeps the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming. Over its lifetime of 10,000 hours, a compact fluorescent, which uses 25% as much electricity as a standard light bulb, spares over 750 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Congregation Bet Haverim is the first synagogue to join ranks with Georgia Interfaith Power and Light – a coalition that promotes energy efficiency. The One for Each Night campaign is an attempt to educate congregants about energy efficiency in their own homes. Congregants purchase 8 fluorescent light bulbs and a study guide. In the guide are nightly readings, each featuring a benefit of conserving energy, a light bulb joke, and a blessing to be recited. The $36 package should save over $360 in energy costs. The study guide developed by Bet Haverim includes nightly readings about the benefits of conserving energy, light bulb jokes, and a blessing to be recited on each night of Hanukkah. The study guide is made available for free online in the hope that other congregations will be inspired to launch similar light bulb campaigns.
