Change your map. Begin working on your paper in a way you normally wouldn't. If normally you begin by freewriting, instead begin by reading, by talking to someone, by outlining, by giving a five-minute monologue on your topic, or by writing everything you know about your topic on a paper napkin with a ball point pen. Think of the process of writing your paper as driving home by taking a route you have never taken before.
Before you write a draft of your assignment, paraphrase the assignment. Your paraphrase should equal the length of the assignment but should be entirely in your own words. Don't borrow any phrases, and especially don't copy any direction words (explain, propose, observe, etc.). Take your paraphrase to class or to your teacher and ask if it is accurate. Look at it yourself and decide what are the major differences between the assignment and your paraphrase of the assignment.
