#100: Sex Clubs

San Francisco was noted in the 1980’s for having worked hard to shut down the various bathhouses as a reaction to the spread of AIDS.  In the 1990’s, a variant of the bathhouse the “sex club” made its way into that vacated niche.

When the City started to look at the regulations governing the sex clubs, espeically with regard to fire code issues and monitoring for patrons following proper safer sex guidelines, the vocal reaction from some sectors of the gay community made them back off.

I think that this event was one of the lead-ins to the formation of groups like Sex Panic.
