$33 billion energy bill goes before House

13 July 2009-- A $33 billion energy and water spending bill goes before the House this week.

The bill funds the Energy Department and several other government agencies. It is expected to be on the House floor Wednesday with about 100 submitted amendments, including one to reverse the decision to abandon the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste dump and getting rid of eight "energy hubs."

The bill provides $26.9 billion for DOE, which is $86 million above current spending, according to the House Appropriations Committee.

Renewable energy and efficiency programs get $2.25 billion, while nuclear energy research gets $812 million.

The $618 million budget for fossil energy research is geared toward research and development for carbon capture and storage projects and alternative fuel technologies.
