PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Palmyra
Kung Fu
Monday and Wed evenings in North Palmyra. Both
Hubby and youngest daughter age 12(students must be 12 or older) are taking classes, although all my kidos have taken classes
here over the years. The studio is on Edison Drive which is near Gravel Hill Church. The class is extremely affordable,
all ages, adults and kids together, and the instructors really like what they are doing. My favorite part is the emphasis
is on control, averting dangerous situations and self defense.
Time is from 7-8pm Monday and Wed nights, pay per month, dress is comfortable; sweats,
and sneakers are fine - no need to buy anything special. This has been great cardio exercise for my husband, and is
keeping my daughter in shape. Please feel free to email me at the link at bottom of page for more info. or call
instructor Jack Alt @ 838-4254, or Calvin Chappel @ 838-5895

Home School Resource Exchange
Hershey ZooAmerica
Pick a morning, up to 4 times a year, and get the chance to shadow a
zoo keeper at ZooAmerica. For $15.00, you shadow from 8-11:30a.m. in one of the 4 areas of the zoo. The areas
are divided into first building, second building, south side of stream, and north side of stream.
This program is for ages 14 and up. To register, call ZooAmerica
@ 534-3862 (Dale Snyder)
UPDATE- Emma
had an awsome time! She got so close to the wolves she could see the speckles in their eyes, and had story after story
to tell. What a fabulous way to spend a morning, she can't wait to do it again - now she just has to decide which area
to do next! Emily's 2nd area was other side of the creek-the bears and
deer. Again she had a wonderful time, lots of stories, and chances to get close to the animals that are usually sleeping
when we visit the zoo. 3RD Visit Today was in the first
building, with the Roseate Spoonbills and the Armadillo. Emily got to help clean out the Armadillo's cage, and feed
the snakes! Next month she will be in the Desert Building with the Tortoises and the Gila Monsters - COOL! This
is a great program!
PAWS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
My youngest daughter and I are volunteering at the local PETSMART one morning a week to clean
the cat cages in their adoption area. The upside for my daughter is that we are encouraged to play with the cats and
kittens while we are there - she would love to be there HOURS!
They are urgently seeking more volunteers,
(currently in need of volunteers for Thursday and Friday morning cleanings) and this is a very simple "job",
fresh food and water, clean the litter in each cage (depending on layout, about 3 to 5 cages) and you can do this
anytime between 7am and 9:30 am. It takes us about one hour. They
prefer it be clean when the store opens at 9, but are just grateful someone is willing to do the job. To volunteer, pick up
an application by the kitties, it is an adoption/volunteer sheet- fill it out, and return it to PetSmart. We got a call
the very next day. Now, I just have to make sure all the Kitties stay at PetSmart when we leave- no smuggling
them out girls!! We are really enjoying this experience, and love seeing the kitties go to new homes. They
have such different personalities, we are usually there under an hour, but much of that time is spent playing with and enjoying
the cats.

Contra Dance
Contra dancing has been explained to me as square dancing in a line. You face a partner,
there is a caller and live music, and you will progress down the line as you dance. Sounds like fun, and a very popular
family friendly/homeschool popular activity. These links are for groups that meet nearby, and encourage all age
participation.
Fossil and Nature Trips!
This is a cool site, out of Philidelphia, homeschoolers and their parent's taking fossil and
gemological field trips lead by experts in the field. We tried to go on several of the trips, but, they fill up very
fast. Sign up for their bi-weekly email, so that you will be notified in advanced of the web site posting. Recently
we participated in a fun trip on a downtown Philidelphia gem hunt day trip! Yes- garnets in a downtown Philidelphia
park.
Primary
Periodic Table
This web site teaches the primary version of the periodic table, and it
cost $10.00. for a booklet/teacher's guide, notebook sized primary periodic table and weekly emails on each element.
There are so many ideas to make this adjustable for younger or older students, and we are using for middle/lower high school,
as a warm up for Chemistry next year. So far, I am very pleased with the emails, and the ideas for teaching the elements
are very age flexible. Check it out!
T & D's Cats of the World
Well, we're off to T & D' S Cats of the World on Friday May 9th! I have us set to tour at 1:00 , and plan to
take a picnic lunch to eat at their covered picnic area before hand. I am planning to "pull out" here in Cleona at 11:00 that
should put us there at 12:30- giving 1/2 hour to eat our PB&J, and visit with the parrots in the outer zoo area. Here is
the website link, there is tons of info there for families to access before hand ---
The group rate is.... Ages 3-12 is $4.00 (with the discount) and
ages 13 and over $9.00 (with the discount), under 3 is free.
I cannot stress enough how much better this is than a zoo - you are truly close
enough to count the whiskers on the tigers! About 2-3 feet away and they are seeking human contact, so they want to
be near humans - unfortunately. The lemurs and ringtails alone entertain us for hours! they have an emus and deer feeding
station where the girls love to collect the branching feathers of the emus -one quill two feather ends - very cool!
Terry the owner is a terrific guy ex state police trooper, and he is just all about
rescuing these lions and tigers (sadly now more animals) from bad situations, and giving them wonderful places to live. He
now has quite a large collection of critters on a beautiful wooded estate. Lizzie's favorites are
the Lemurs, someone bought them at an exotic pet auction thinking they would be cute house pets! They are in huge wonderful
cages, and live in a family setting like in the wild, and you can get so close to them - they always are so entertaining.
Anyway, besides the animals, there are covered picnic facilities in a seperate area of the property, (as well as a yummy
ice cream shop about a half hour away-always a stop on the way home). T & D's is a beautiful place, you are
about two feet from the lions and tigers, and emus, and deer, and tons of other really neat critters.
I have done this trip several times before, mostly just our family. The charge is minimal. We usually pick up some
things on the web site wish list to take along, this is a favorite activity for the girls to help them feel like they are
involved in the rescue side, not just a "zoo tour". The wish list can be found on the web site. I am also soliciting
businesses for donations of supplies, they are in need of building supplies for larger cages as more and more animals are
"dumped" on rescue organizations. If you work for or know of any businesses that may be willing to donate in exchange
for free advertising, please email me and I will get you the list of supplies and a request letter.
The animals look forward to meeting you!!
Anyone
planning to attend is asked to email Laura at centralpahomeschooling@earthlink.net--thank you!
