Schroth Harness Install

***Disclaimer: Motorsports are dangerous and require the right safety equipment and that it be installed correctly. I make no guarantees that this harness will protect you with the car sitting still let alone moving. It should be considered for "show" purposes only. If you chose to wear the harness when you are in the car (moving or not) you are doing so at your own risk.***

Things to consider about a harness install: A 4 point harness is not considered safe by any sanctioning body in racing. 5 or 6 points is required for safety, a 4 point belt can do more body damage than it prevents. A harness should not be installed without a roll bar in the car. A harness will hold you upright in the event of a rolover, this is instant death without proper rollover protection, a 3 point belt allows the body to slump during a rollover.

Be safe, drive responsibly.

These instructions are a little incomplete, but the job is really easy, so don't be afraid. I can supply more detail if you require. Just ask. This install does not require cutting and is 100% reversible.

First, you will want to remove the rear seat backs. Pop the 2 plastic retainers out of the Plastic shelf in the rear of the car (actually it is a milk jug holder, fits a 1 gal jug perfectly). Once out, lift the tray with a light tug and it should pop right out.

Next, remove the rear seat backs. The cloth cover on the seat backs will peel away on the corners to reveal retaining bolts, undo all of these bolts (4 bolts total, one on each seat back corner).

I left the hinges attached to the car and removed the bolts from the seats themselves.

With the seat back out the seat bottom can be removed. From the front of the bottom, slide your hand under the cushion about 1/4 of the way in, give a sharp tug, the seat will pop out of a clip. Repeat with the other side.

With the seat bottom removed, now you are ready for the harness install.

Tail Strap

First lay out the tail strap as you want it to appear in the car (might actually want to put the seat bottom in for this, to help visulaize the bends.

For the buckle side, unbolt the buckle and pull it out of the plastic sleeve. Pay attention to how things were so you can put them back right. Bend the tab on the Schroth to match the bend on the buckle bracket. I mounted the Schroth tailstrap so it was *inside* the back seatbelt (makes it possible to still easily use the rear seatbelt).

Before bending.

After bending

Slide the assembly back into the rubber sleeve and bolt into place. Now bring the seatbottom into the car and loosly assemble, threading the other end of the tailstrap through the buckle hole.

Pull the seat out of the way and bolt the other end of the tailstrap to the rear shoulder harness bolt. Bend the tailstrap bracket as needed to give a good fit.

Here is the assembled product:

Go ahead and reassemble the back seat.

Lap belt:

Lap belt mounting is easy. I used the factory mount for the outside, and the seat bracket mount for the inside. See pictures, they are pretty clear.

Outside/doorside mount

Inside mount

Now just thread the shoulder straps through the hole in the seat and you are done. When not in use the stock seat belt can be used with no problems, just unbuckle the Schroth and tuck it up under the drivers seat. You will not even know it is there. This has been a great investment for Autocrossing!
