NATURAL STUDIES INTENSIVE

October and November 2004

A ONE WEEK TO TWO MONTH IMMERSION INTO THE WORLD OF NATURE, TRADITIONAL SKILLS, COMMUNITY AND SPIRIT.

This program is being offered at Cedarwood Camp Ltd, a square mile retreat in the Shoshone Mountains of North Central Nevada. In the lightly wooded foothills of the Shoshone Mountains we will let go of the shackles of modern society and reconnect with our ancient earth roots. We will adapt the Peace Principles as the fundamental building blocks for our cultural experience. We will start and end each day with a period of personal introspection and prayer to Creation. We will have regular ceremony to express our gratitude for the opportunity to live on Earth.

The curriculum will include shelter building in the first week so you will have a place to live. We will cook our meals communally and everyone will share the work necessary to maintain the village. We will have ongoing workshops on fire making, the study of plants, tracking, awareness, trapping, cordage, weather patterns, stone tools, water sources, traditional food preparation, food storage, brain tanning, etc., etc.

This program is being facilitated by Medicine Bear, alias Bwana Bill. Bill has taken outdoor/nature workshops, studied with elders, spent 4 years in Africa in the 70‘s operating motorcycle safaris, and been on numerous solo/group camping expeditions.

The cost of this program is $400.00 for one week, $700.00 for two weeks, $850.00 for three weeks, $1000.00 for four weeks, $1200.00 for eight weeks (the 8 week price is a discounted work/study price)  These prices include use of the land for building your own shelter, all meals and the basic mentoring for this experience. The meals will be wholesome, well prepared and satisfying. The shelters will be small and built along the lines of “Hobbit Houses”. There will be a central sheltered area for group activities and ceremony. You will be expected to contribute to the overall maintenance of the community. This will include physical labor such as cooking, dishes, and chopping wood. The community will support all members emotionally and spiritually.

Contact us for details.

Cedarwood Camp is located 20 miles south of Battle Mountain, a town on Interstate 80 in central Nevada. You can get there by bus, train, or fly into Reno, about a 3 hour drive. We will assist long term members with transportation to camp. 1 or 2 week members will hopefully have their own transportation. It is in the high desert with 300 days of sunshine and about 8 inches of rain annually. Treed with Juniper and Cedar, the property is surrounded by higher mountains and has a spectacular view to the west for desert sunsets.

Preparing for this experience will involve a personal effort at many levels. The more you prepare, the more you will receive. First: your own mental and physical health. Get some exercise and process as much of your personal grief as possible. You will get support during this intensive but it is not the place to bring a lot of personal baggage. This is a workshop for people who have a stable base and are ready to build from that space. Second: spend time practicing your skills. This will help establish that stable base. You should master one skill to the point where you can teach or co-teach that skill. For example learning everything available on 4 local plants or 4 local animals would be a skill. Third: create a time frame in your life, 2 weeks or 2 months, that will allow you the freedom to fully embrace this opening.

This experience will be about letting go of all the notions you have about God, Nature, and Culture. In the simplicity of The Shoshone Mountains you will connect with a more real and pure knowing. I don’t even know how to say it. There is a simplicity that we all miss. There is a calling that we all hear. As a group of individuals we will be committed to creating the space for each of us to go deeper within. We are all Master Teachers. We just have to sit down together in a sacred manner, away from the distractions of our western lifestyles, to share and laugh with each other.

"21st CENTURY BUFFALO HUNT"

We will have a modern day buffalo "hunt".  Although the buffalo are not roaming wild, there are ranches in Nevada that raise buffalo.  We will purchase a whole living buffalo and with the proper ceremony we will ask the animal to teach us and to join us physically and spiritually.  We will butcher the entire animal.  We will dry and jerk some of the meat.  There rest will be frozen and eaten throughout the program.  We will brain tan the hide, and keep the skull to honor our connection with the buffalo nation.  We will use every possible part of the animal for tools, food, etc.

BWANA WHO?

A little background on Bwana Bill, or Medicine Bear.

Bill is 58 years old with a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in the Art of Living.  In 1972 he asked himself when he would be 26 and single again, so he purchased a new 750cc BMW motorcycle in London and proceeded to put on 33,000 miles in 11 months.  These travels were all over Europe to the North Cape of Norway and trans-Africa from Gibraltar to Niarobi, Kenya.  In 1974 he organized a second trans-African expedition with 12 - 250cc Hondas and a support truck:  "Cycletrek '74".  From 1975 to 1978 he operated motorcycle safaris, group camping safaris, hiking trips on elephant trails in tropical forests and also ran 4 tons of dynamite to the Sudan.

On returning to the States in 1978 he found himself in a Gurdjieff Study Group for 12 years.  Then Spirit moved him to the Tracker School where with 16 classes he is kind of a 'Tracker Junkie'.  This period also included numerous solo backing trips, summer and winter, climbing the Matterhorn in Switzerland and being a white water rafting guide.

In the mid 90's he started studying with various elders and by the late 90's was leading ceremony.  He has sat in an elder's chair at the East Coast Art of Mentorings for several years.  His vision is to preserve Earth Wisdom and to lay the foundation for a holistic, in balance, culture on Earth.  The programs at Cedarwood Camp Ltd. and the Sage Valley Community are the newest parts of his vision that have manifested.  He is committed to holding the ground for the changes that are necessary to have humans in balance with the natural world.
