chef rusty eats indianapolis

chef rusty recently went back to his former stomping grounds for a short visit.  he really did have excellent, professional reasons for being there, as well as a fine family visit.  but it seems that he spent quite a bit of time sampling the culinary diversity of hoosierland.  herewith, some of his comments:

"Two days of relatively-unmitigated sunshing here in Naptown, although for those of Tucsonon blood, it seems a tad chilly.
Good times:
- lunch at White Castle with Mom,
- dinner at Amici's (Goooooood bread made on site.  I bet I'll get the Chicken Gorgonzola.  I almost always do.  Well, that or the Zuppa di Mare.  Mm.) with the Indy Gang,
- Lunch with MK at my favorite Indian restaurant,
- B-day dinner at the Mayberry Cafe for Dad when he has to wear a funny hat,
- dinner at Cazuela's (Mexican) with some Fairfield Friends.
Hm.  I wonder.  Does that seem like a lot of eating to you?

Last night's dinner was at Bonefish Grill, franchise, yet surprisingly good.  (my family, as you may know, are almost exclusively restaurantivores.) Menu at www.bonefish.com/bfg_menu.pdf.  Here's a Bonefish picture.

The appetizer, big, flakey crabcakes, were served on a plain and pretty plate, surrounded by a 1/2 wide ring of alternating ketchup-red and pesto-green.  The ring was a tangy sauce combo for the cakes.  The cakes and sauce left a slight and pleasant afterburn which foreshadowed the spiciness of the meal.  For dear Pop, who loathes shellfish, there was a very nice, crusty, non-white bread the size of your hands when they hold an invisible loaf of nice, crusty non-white bread and are fingertip to fingertip.  Actually, there were several such breads.  Dad loved them and shared freely.

I went for the butterfish with warm mango salsa, and was quite pleased.  The sides wowed me.  Steamed veggies medly came in large chunks and was piquant:  little trees (I does love my little trees), red pepper, asparagus, long green beans.  Also on the plate was red cabbage with onion and cooked apple. Mmm.  The entree itself made me happy:  grilled butterfish with a sweet and spicy mango salsa.  My only complaint, the mango bits were a bit tough to spear, too small to easily nab with the fork as one prepared to stab the fish bit.  I tried not to be too obsessive about the process.  The low burn of the salsa, the sweet mango, and the tasty fish were delightful.  For desert Mom had honest-to-goodness Key Lime pie (the right color, not Easter-egg green).  I was forced to have the creme brulee, served as it was with real whipped cream and two big honkin' blackberries and a mint leaf.  Oh yeah.  Down-home cookin'.
