IV. Unique Operation of the Outstanding Protégés
The Protégés have the unique advantage that they allow the wheel circumference to be set to 9.999 meters. This means that at this setting they have the unique ability to record individual revolutions using only a single magnet on spoke 18 with a 32-spoke wheel or on spoke 20 with a 32-spoke wheel . In this mode the possibility of spurious impulses are practically eliminated especially if the bicycle is stopped immediately after a meter increment. Resetting the meter for regular bicycling is simply a matter of pushing a button on the back of the meter
The magnet that comes with the Protégés is very heavy and I have mostly used a Sigma Sport magnet instead. However, for convenience measurers may wish to use the Protégé magnet as shown on the right. Note that in contrast to the Sigma Sport magnet, it has to aligned with a spot on the sensor.
In this special mode of operation, the wheel has to be rolled back about 10 degrees after aligning the rim zero-point with the start before the meter is zeroed.
The above operational details are all most measurers need to know. However, if measurement is planned beyond 10,000 rev, which for most wheels is equivalent to over a half marathon, and the meter is not rezeroed, note the following. At 10,000 rev the meter will not increment, but remain at a display of 9999 for a further revolution. Onwards from this point, one should be added to the display. If measurement goes to 20,000 rev or over a marathon without rezeroing, the meter will not increment but remain at a display of 19998 for a further revolution and two should be added to the display from this point onwards.
The above special start procedure and the complication with the meter reading do not apply if the meter is set to a circumference of 5 meters and two magnets are used.
