Hello There, welcome to my website. This website is designed to explain and promote a conceptual element in renewable energy that I have thought of, the Catenary Solar Reflector.
What is a catenary reflector? Well, first, the "catenary" part: the catenary is the shape that is taken on by a flexible chain that is held by the two ends under the influence of gravity.
It looks like a parabola. In fact, the shape of a hanging chain originally was mistakenly thought to be a parabola, the familiar y=x2 curve that we all were introduced to in highschool. This was disproved by Jungius in a work published in 1669. In 1691, Leibniz, Christiaan Huygens, and Johann Bernoulli derived the correct equation for this shape in response to a challenge by Jakob Bernoulli. This equation is the hyperbolic cosine function, y = cosh(x).
After several years of doing research on renewable energy in the evenings after work, I was lucky enough to arrive at the concept of using a flexible reflector, hanging on its own weight to focus solar energy into useful levels. Such a reflector would take on the profile of the catenary curve, and is similar to a parabolic mirror within certain design parameters. I am certain that this is considered by others, so it is my hope to apply some rigorous engineering and mathematical analysis to the idea to bring it beyond "tinker" stage. After all, without math, physics would be just...a story.
I feel strongly that this concept has major merits in providing a much cheaper solar solution than most conventional designs. The applications I have envisioned range from portable heaters for cooking and water boiling in developing countries, to high end, high energy power generation.
At certain point in one's life (read: mid-life crisis), the value of minor monetary profit is not as high as the wish to leave a little piece of positive impact to the world. As such, I would like to offer up this idea in total to anyone who wants to apply it for the goodness of mankind. I will be glad to answer a question or two via emails, and you are free to use the information within as you wish. However, I would appreciate it if you'd be kind enough to credit me where it is due.
This site and the work within is dedicated to Daira, the one who put meaning and happiness into my life.
Thanks.
