Mark Miele (02-06-08): My daughter Hannah and I really enjoy Carolina Chess Club. Its a very comfortable environment
for her as a 9 year old and for both of us as novice players. No one looks down on anyone if they happened to be a low
rated player and good sportsmanship is emphasized. I particulary want to thank Mr. Chu and the stronger players including
NM Chris Mabe and another fellow that I have seen before but didnt catch his name last week, sorry!) that are willing to spend
some time in post game analysis for us lower ranked folks. It speaks volumes to me to have encouraging people and an encouraging
environment like this available. I hope that one day I will be good enough to be able to help out the beginners as we have
been helped. I look forward to improving my play at Carolina Chess Club.
Norm Pruitt (02/01/2008): Hi Everyone,
With 3117 hits/visits in the first 30 days the http://www.enginechess.com website is considerable more successful than I ever expected. The site is an attempt to provided the computer vs computer
chess community the information needed to have a competitive engine vs engine experience.
2007 Comments:
Ian Morton (07/23/07): US Open - Looking for room-mate I'm going up for the US Open 6 day schedule. I'm looking
for an adult Carolinas player who would like to share the cost of the hotel room and rental car for 5 days.
I have nice room resreved at a Wingate Inn with an employee discount - $60 a night, linked below. I plan to do
some sight seeing in Philadelphia on the 4th/5th. Email axiom27@gmail.com or call (843) 813-8968 if interested.
Mike Klein(7/18/07): Thanks for a great team tournament. I had a great time.
Todd Trower(07/16/07): I had fun at the team tournament; it was a great idea. There should be more like this in
Charlotte. Maybe next time we could have a speed tourney (perhaps with three or four man teams).
Tim Champion: (7/12/07) 1223 seeks partner for team tourney. This assumes Paul and Will partner, which is
the current plan. Any 787's or 1787's out there?
David Causey(07/05/07): I can only say one thing about the results at the World Open! WOW!! Way to go, Chris,
and note that Charleston's Ian Morton won the U1100 section, too! That's the way to bring that money south!
Dave Eadie (07/01/07): Reading through the comments I have to agree with Todd Trower that this is perhaps the greatest
chess club in the world. This new club offers ultra quiet controlled conditions. The player's area is partitioned
off from any coming and going noise in the front. G/2 on a Saturday night is a treat that I've really been enjoying.
Thank you for making this possible Wing.
David Causey (06/28/07): Fellow Carolinas Chessplayers,
Over eight months has passed since the first Carolinas Challenge was held. Though much post mortem was generated
after this exciting tournament, it is time to put that aside and begin planning for the 2nd Annual Carolinas Challenge.
There is state pride and a nice trophy at stake and we must not miss out on the opportunity to build this tournament
into a mainstay for the Carolinas. Many of you played some of your best chess while representing your team and your
state. We need to start the discussion on how we can continue this type of tournament and make it into a very unique
event. Let's see all of your suggestions concerning venue, organizers, format, special pairing rules, prizes,
etc. so that we can start the process for a better and more exciting tournament. Even if your suggestions are for
a change in promoters and organizers, all will be taken into consideration in order to make the second event a reality.
Todd Trower(6/26/07): This is the greatest chess club in the history of the world. Where else can you play
a G/2 hrs every week?
Cathy Taggart(06/20/07): CRAZY HORSE OPEN http://www.cmsca.org/23rdTournaments.htm ++ TOURNAMENT SITE THE JUNE 23rd TOURNAMENT WILL BE AT SOUTH MECK HIGH SCHOOL ON PARK ROAD. REGISTRATION WILL
BE IN BUILDING 'E'... FOLLOW PARKING LOT AROUND TO THE BUILDING.
Jeremy Davenport(5/17/07): Awesome, another club in the Queen city! Congrat's on NM title Mr. Mabe.
Jason Mullins(4/29/07): The club is great, the site is great, would like to see some games on here. Just a suggestion.
Congratulations to Chris Mabe as well, mayby he can teach me how not to blunder!
David Causey(4/27/07): Congratulations to NM Chris Mabe! As a follower of Chris' chess career, he has made steady
progress to his well-deserved title. Thanks, Chris, to all you bring to chess and your support of the regional chess
community.
Garrick Wells (4/5/07): Hello Chess People, I am glad to see a new chess club in Charlotte and that some old friends
are still around.
Joshua Mu(3/19/07): Hi All, I wish some one told me earlier regarding this club. I just found out this evening. Actually
my mom told me:-) Since I can't make the school day chess clubs, this Saturday evening is a good time for me. I will try to
come this coming Saturday March 24. See you all there!
Bernard Baker(3/15/07): Hello Everybody. Just wanted say that I too am thankful for the Carolina Chess Club. Saturday
is the best evening for me to play Chess, as I have to get up early every other day. It is a pleasant environment,
and if I don't have a date, I plan on attending. P.S. If anybody out there can help me beat my buddies Chris Mabe, or John
Lane, please, I would appreciate your help!
Andrey Chumachenko:(2/17/07) Hello all my chess friends!I have to support the idea of Saturday's chess evenings! Unfortunatelly
right now I have some schedule conflicts. But i hope to participate very soon!
Patrick McCartney(2/15/07): Hello.
My name is Patrick. Those that have played on Wednesday nights know me. I plan to be there this Saturday.
I read Tom Hales' and Wing Chu's messages about Saturdays, and I agree with Wing. If you can't make it, don't come.
However, I would like to suggest perhaps putting a contact number on here for those that can come, but would get there at
7, rather than 6. That way, they'd be on the pairing sheet when they arrived at 7. A good example of this is anybody
that goes to a Bertucci's tournament once every 2 months (which I now run). Typically, that ends around 6 to 6:30, and
isn't far from the site of this club. That way, when they are done, they can call, get on the pairing sheet, and pay
when they arrive. I see that there is no meeting next week, which is the next Bertucci's, but at future times, this
could be a very big convenience to many. That way, when they get done stinking it up at Bertucci's, they can get their
revenge here! See you guys Saturday.
Peter Giannatos (2/12/07): Hello everyone, I am so glad to see that the club is working out for the best. I probably
will not be able to make it anytime soon because I am helping out at my parents' restaurant in Rock Hill, SC. Be
there when I can!
Ken Baxter (2/11/07): Thank you for hosting the new Carolina Chess Club. It is tough for me to attend during the
busy tax season; however, please know that I appreciate and support your efforts. Good luck with the CCC!

The following are email exchanges from Tom Hales and Wing Chu:
Wing Chu (2/9/07): My name is Wing Chu. I am the organizer of the Carolina Chess Club. Thank you for your
very thoughtful comments about our club.
I am relatively unknown to most adult chess players from the Carolinas. My involvement in chess has been, almost exclusively, with
scholastics. I have been a board member of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Scholastic Chess association (CMSCA)
for the past two years; I sponsor two local elementary school chess clubs; and most importantly, I am a proud parent
of a couple of chess playing kids.
Saturday nights are the only times the playing site is available to the chess club. Also, Saturday evening
is usually the only free time I have. Sunday afternoons will not work because that's when CYCC meets. (Charlotte Youth
Chess Club is by far the biggest chess club in Charlotte, if not the Carolinas.) Weekday nights will not work, well, they're
school nights.
My goal, with the Carolina Chess Club, is to promote chess to the general public. Even though there are multiple
tournament events every weekend, only the most hardcore chess players attend those tournaments. With this club, I want it
to be easy for the parents; my hope is that a complete novice, perhaps a child, feels just as welcomed as a seasoned
master; also, the club should be a place where adept players can gather up and offer their experiences to others; and lastly,
I've always like the idea of long time control games.
I am looking forward to have you visit our club. Good luck with your tournaments. Thank you again!

Tom Hales (2/9/07):It looks like you've started something good in Charlotte. It is not clear to me who organized
the club from your website, nor whom I am contacting here. Perhaps you might want to include this information on your
site.
I wanted to make a friendly observation...I think your club would be better if you met on a different day, perhaps
on Sunday afternoons. As it stands now, your schedule conflicts with 100% of the tournaments in North Carolina, including Charlotte tournaments. I've always thought
it best that clubs work synergistically with tournaments.
I know that this conflict could make a difference...I would
like to come play at your club. I have a friend who can't play on Saturdays for religious reasons, and I know he would
be interested as well. It would be extremely difficult for me to do Saturdays due to other tournaments and tournament
obligations.
Nice website! I like the design. It looks like you have a terrific playing site, too.
Thanks
for your consideration of these thoughts. I do not know if another day is a possibility, but I do think it could work
better for your club. _________________________________________________________
Phillip Whittington(2/6/07): I can't wait to lose a game at the new Carolina chess club, as long as I am crushing
a higher rated opponent and then blow it. That would make it a sweep, I've done that everywhere else in Charlotte, lol. High
everybody!!!
taroak(2/4/07): Had a great time on Saturday night. Played OK but I did not feel lousy the next day because I did not have to work.
Thanks go out to Mai and Wing Chu for their generosity and support.
Chris mabe(2/4/07): I had a great time at the club last night. I would like to thank Mai and Wing for their generosity.
I'm not sure if I have ever met nicer people.
Daniel Tapia(2/2/07): Best of luck to the club. I am happy there's another club in Charlotte, when I was younger I would
go to every one (there were a few). One day I will play at the new CCC, until then, farewell.
Gary Newsom(2/1/07): Looks like REAL chess is coming
to Charlotte! I'll be there when I can.
Peter Giannatos(1/31/07): Glad to see a new club in the area. Hope to see you there.
James MacDougall(1/31/07): Its great to see an official weekend chess club in the area with rated play. I will
do my best to make it, and I'll try to bring some fellow Columbia players to show support. Who knows, I may even get
my 5-year old son to play.
Bob Halliday(1/31/07): Good Luck with the new club! Sat night G/2 sounds good. I'll see you guys in a few weeks. One
suggestion for your membership list is to at least post the member's home city.
Dennis Kitchens(1/30/07): Count us all 4 in.
taroak(1/29/07): I'll be there. Can't wait to play G/2 will be good for me. I can't wait to play again.
