Notes for AUGUSTA
ELIZABETH
NICHOLSON:
In 1879, John and
Augusta and their two sons went to Texas where they farmed in Robertson County.
John's brother, James P. Archer, worked on their farm.
They stayed in Texas about five years.
About 1884, John, August and children returned to Tennessee because of
poor health in the family. Augusta's
father, James S. Nicholson, had died Jan. 18, 1882 and there probably was a need
for someone to help Mattie Nicholson operate the farm.
After their return to
Tennessee, John and Augusta Archer had more chidlren. Grover was named after the Democrat from Buffalo who was
President from 1884-88. August, who
had been only 18 years old when she married John, was 41 years old when their
last child was born.
John Sevier Archer,
third son of Juriat D. and Sarah Overfelt Archer, was born in Tennessee on July
2, 1852. John was almost 22 years
when he and Augusta were married. They
lived and farmed in Hawkins County and the children walked through the valley to
Slate Hill School which they attended a few months a year.
They were all reared to be farmers, but Ada was educated and became a
teacher, later taching in Oklahoma where she married Burtis Alge.
Almost a year after
their eleventh child Ida was born, Augusta's mohter, Matilda A. Nicholson, died
July 31, 1898. Her body was laid to
rest next to her departed husband, James S. Nicholson, in the Nicholson Cemetery
at the corner of the farm. A
monumnet points heavenward with the words "Gone Home".
Their son, Bryon's, grave is marked with a stone dating his death Sept.
15, 1899, when he was sixteen years old.

lake.
"I can remember my
mother talking about the train we called Pee-Vine. It traveled from Knoxville to Bristol, TN.
When my mother visited her brother Kyle Nicholson, she rode the Pee-Vine
to Morristown and then the bus to Russellville.
My mother often visited Uncle William Robert Nicholson that lived in
Morristown. She could walk from the
depot to his home She often talked
about his nice horse and buggy.
"Times have really
changed since this time. Now there
is a highway that bypasses Morristown, and you can make the trip from Grainger
County to Russellville in a car in 30 minutes."

Notes for CHRISTINE
NORTON:
"My mother married
my father, William Alexander Norton, Sr., on Aug. 10, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia.
He was in the Army at Camp Gordon, Georgia during WWI.
They moved back to Hawkins County, TN after the war, and on Sept. 14,
1923, they had twin daughters that died as babies - Louise Elizabeth and Nellie
Vada. In 1933 our family built a
new house on my mother's property which was property she inherited from the
Nicholson farm. We lived there 34
years.
"I can remember my
mother, Ethel, telling us the story of a visit at their home when she was a
child. My grandmother Nevada
Nicholson heard a knock on the door and when she opened the door, there was a
black woman inquiring about George Pinkney Nicholson, my grandfather.
George recognized her immediately. They
had played together as children and one could tell they were extremely fond of
one another. Her parents were slaves owned by Grandfather's family years
before. They stayed up until
midnight discussing their childhood years.
She spent the night and left the following morning.
"We were a poor
family but Daddy and Mother always kept us in church. We attended the County Line Church [in Grainger County] where
our grandparents attended years before. In
1933, after my Uncle Joseph Osco Nicholson and his wife died, Guy came and lived
with us for seven years. He was 14
years old when he left.
"In 1942, I married
Audley E. Wyatt. He served in WWII
and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 26 months.
He died in 1953.
"On Feb. 4, 1967, I
married Hugh C. Hopkins. We built a
new house and the day it was finished, we married in the living room.
My mother lived with us until her death August 5, 1979.
My husband and I attend New Hope Gospel Church and have for years.
We are also active members of Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary
Chapter #59. We are Chaplains with

"I was an only
child. I had a good life growing
up. I had something money can't buy
- parents who loved me very much. Being
an only child with no one to share with, I think I was closer to my parents than
a lot of children were. They were
very protective of me, but I sure received a lot of whippings, even though I was
spoiled.
"They would walk
and take me to church and Dad would carry me.
My dad was always smiling even after a hard day at work.
He would bring Mother and me Milky Way candy bars home in his lunch box.
I believe all the Nicholsons are good people.
"I can't remember
too much about visits with my dad's people when I was small.
My parents did not have a car and they lived in another county.
I never did see my dad's parents. My
mother's parents lived nearby in the same county, so they would visit with us a
lot, and we would walk to see them.
"My dad would have
been so proud had he lived to see our road named after him -- the Nicholson Road
in Whitesburg, Tennessee."

Notes for ROY

ARCHER:
On a cold autumn day in
1902, Roy Archer carved "Gone to Texas" on the porch post of his
parents' home in Hawkins County. Roy
and Mary Archer and their two daughters, Minnie and Maude left by railroad for
Texas. In Carrolton County, Texas,
Roy's aunt and uncle, Alice Nicholson Horner and Will Horner, owned a general
store. Roy worked in the store that
winter, and Minnie and Maude played with the cases of eggs and tasted the
pickles in the big barrels.
In the Spring of 1903,
Roy Archer and his family traveled to the new territory, Oklahoma and were met
at the railroad station at Pond Creek in Grant County by Roy's uncle, Val
Archer, with his buggy and team of horses.
It was a cold day in early Spring when they arrived, and the girls needed
warmer clothes. The family went to
the store, as Minnie and Maude skipped down the street shouting "we're
going to get new coats". Then
they went home with Uncle Val.

"My mother and
family lived with my grandmother in the Bassett house.
It is in the Northeast corner of Grainger County.
My grandmother and grandfather lived, at the beginning of their marriage,
in a log cabin and then built the new house in front of the log house.
"My grandmother,
Ella Nicholson, was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever known.
She was a very religious person and read her Bible faithfully.
I can remember before we began our walk to church, she would take time to
"starch" her face referring to the need to powder her face.
My grandmother's hair was white as snow, and she always wore it pulled
back and parted in the middle. My
grandmother always remained close to her sister, Augusta Elizabeth Nicholson
Archer.
"My mother and
father, Bessie Bassett and Lon Willis, loved to sing. They were requested to sing at many funerals.
Our son Mark Livesay can recall the time she sang "Rock of
Ages" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" to him right before
she died. At her funeral, he
requested that these two songs be sung.
"My husband is J.

retired and live in Bean Station, TN. We
are the parents of two sons, Dennis Livesay who married Rebecca Campbell, and
