1.  JOHN1 BOWMAN was born 1711 in a German-speaking country, and died April 4, 1795 in Washington County, MD.  He married CATHERINE SPARLING or CATHERINE LETTS/LUTZ.

    "John Bowman was sometimes called Hans, or Hance, Bowman.  His will, dated October 5 1785, was certified and recorded in Washington County Maryland, April 4, 1795 and names is wife, Catherine, and six children: John Bowman, Charity Young, Charles Bowman, Aaron Bowman, Sparling Bowman, and Daniel Bowman.  John and Daniel were executors and Gabriel and Jacob Friend were witnesses....Tradition is that four Bowman brothers came to Tennessee from Maryland and they are presumed to have been John, Aaron, Sparling and Daniel."

2.  SPARLING2 BOWMAN (JOHN1)1 was born 1752 in Washington County, MD or PA, and died August 15, 1839 in Greeneville, Greene Co., TN.  He married ELEANOR "NELLY" HIXSON Unknown, daughter of JOSEPH HIXSON and SUSANNAH.  She was born Unknown, and died Aft. August 1839.

Notes for SPARLING BOWMAN:

"Sparling was a Revolutionary War veteran having enlisted in Washington County, Maryland, in July of 1775, and served in Captain Michael Cressess' rifle company at Hagerstown.  He marched to Boston and served under the command of General Putnam and was discharged by Lieutenant Moses Rollins at Staten Island, New York.  His name appears on the list of soldiers who fought at the battle of Kings Mountain and he was on the pension roll of January 10, 1833, at which time he was 82 years of age.  His name also appears on the Petition of the Inhabitants of the Western Country to the General Assembly of North Carolina, for the formation of the State of Franklin, in 1787.  His National Archives File Number is S3048.

A North Carolina Land Grant of December 26, 1791, recorded at the Greene County Court House, gives Sparling Bowman 300 acres on Camp Creek, south side of the Nolachucky River, adjoining Thomas Morgan, Francis Hughes, Jacob Vance, and Joseph Hixson.  Another grant on January 12, 1793 is for 10 pounds per acre - to Sparling Bowman 100 acres in Greene County, adjoining McDonald line on Watery Fork of Camp Creek.

In 1797, Sparling was appointed Constable in Greene County and starting in that year his name appears frequently in Court Minutes. "

"Eleanor was the daughter of Susannah who married Joseph Hixson, however, Eleanor was not the daughter of Joseph.  The Will of Joseph Hixson, dated Greene County, Tennessee, November 26, 1803, does not mention Eleanor.  The maiden names of Susannah Hixson and Eleanor Bowman are not known."

                   i.       MARY "POLLY" BOWMAN, b. ABT 1742; d. 1869 in Greene Co., TN; m. THOMAS JOHNSON in August, 1811. [Note:  Either her dates are wrong or she was not a daughter of Sparling! - need to research this further]

                  ii.       SPARLING BOWMAN, JR., b. ABT  1781; d. bet. 1850 and 1860 in Greene Co., TN; m. MARY WILSON on November 7, 1805.  She was born ABT 1789 and died between 1860 and 1870 in Greene Co., TN.

                 iii.       SUSANNA BOWMAN, b. ABT 1782; m. STEPHEN CANNON.

                 iv.       RACHEL BOWMAN, b. ABT 1786; m.  BENJAMIN WADDLE on August 18, 1812.  He was born August 29, 1792 and died April 22, 1878 in Greene Co., TN. 

NOTE:  Benjamin and Rachel had a daughter, Elizabeth (b. January 22, 1821, d. May 15, 1911) who married Jacob Morelock (b. 1819, d. February 8, 1887), a son of Samuel Morelock and Elizabeth Stacy,  on January 23, 1844.  Elizabeth and Jacob Morelock had a son, George (b. August 13, 1857, d. July 27, 1927) who married Virginia P. Broyles on January 2, 1890.  George and Virginia Morelock had a son, Bruce A., who was a Morelock family researcher.

                  v.       BENJAMIN BOWMAN, b. 1789 in TN; d. 1854 in Dent Co., MO; m. MILLY SKILES on September 16, 1823 in Greene Co., TN.  She died 1871 in Missouri.

                 vi.       CATHERINE BOWMAN, b. 1790; m. EWEN BLAKE in 1810.  He was  born 1794.

                vii.       ELIZABETH "BETSY" BOWMAN, b. February 2, 1794; d. April 5, 1882 in Greene Co., TN; m. PETER HARMON on February 4, 1820.  He was born April 18, 1785 in Tennessee and died August 13, 1870 in Greene Co., TN.

               viii.       KENNEDY BOWMAN, b. ABT  1794; d. May 22, 1890; m. MARY HARRISON on October 20, 1830.  She was born ABT 1814 and died March 22, 1885.

                 ix.       EMELINE "AMY"3 BOWMAN, b. December 18, 1804, Kingsport, TN; d. July 2, 1873, Morristown, TN; m. JONATHAN MORELOCK, SR., November 6, 1823, Greene County, TN2; b. October 15, 1804, Power Dam, Greene County, TN; d. May 14, 1876, Morristown, TN.

Obituary, Morristown (TN) Gazette, May 17, 1876, page 2 column 4:

"Jonathan Morelock, an old and respectable citizen of this community, died very suddenly of heart disease, at his residence three miles east of town, Sunday evening last.  Mr. Morelock attended church on Sabbath morning, returned to his home apparently in good health, and after partaking of a hearty supper, laid down and in a very short time died without a struggle."
