Descendants of Ezekiel Williams

Generation No. 1

1.  EZEKIEL1 WILLIAMS was born 1778 in NC1, and died January 9, 1867 in Jefferson Co., TN.  He married MARY "POLLY" MCDONALD March 3, 1802 in Jefferson Co., TN2, daughter of ALEXANDER MCDONALD and MARGARET RANDOLF.  She was born May 4, 17753, and died July 15, 1859.

Notes for EZEKIEL WILLIAMS:

Directions to Ezekiel Williams cemetery:

In Russellville, at the intersection of 11-E and Warrensburg Rd., turn south onto Warrensburg Rd.  At the stop sign (intersection with Silver City Rd), go straight (almost straight) to continue on Warrensburg Rd.  Take the second rd to the right, Smith Trail.  This is a dead end, and dead-ends at the cemetery, which is next to a big barn which is next to a big white house.  Mrs. Smith lives in this house.

In Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, page 1216, in the entry for G. G. Williams (Ezekiel's grandson, Gideon), Ezekiel's year of birth is given as 1769.  "In childhood, he went to Virginia, and when about twenty-three located within the present limits of Hamblen County.  He soon married a Miss McDaniel, whose parents were, at that time, living about six miles above Morristown, where her parents reared a family of five sons and two daughters who grew to maturity.  Her father died about 1867, and his wife many years before."

From "Hamblen Heritage", Fall 1987:
"Ezekiel Williams was born in 1769 in North Carolina. In 1790 he located about six miles east of Morristown. His son, Alexander Williams, married Hannah Read and settled on Spring Creek, a few miles from Morristown. He had four sons, three of whom located in Morristown, viz: Gid, Wylie and William.
"Gid Williams married Sarah Stubblefield and was a prominent farmer and miller, living in different localities from time to time. He owned a fine farm of several hundred acres, a mile to the northeast of Morristown, now the property of the Morristown Normal and Industrial College. He conveyed water from a fine spring nearby into the house, which was an innovation at that time. From this place, Gid Williams removed to Bright's on the Holston river, where he operated a large mill, and later removed to Morristown. Oscar, the eldest son of Gid Williams, died in early manhood. He was a genial, whole-souled young man and his death was mourned by a large circle of friends. Another son, Bascom, married the adopted daughter of Mrs. Geo. Folsom, Nellie Turley, and removed to Kansas. Ada, a daughter, married Thomas Caon Jr. and removed to Florida. Mortimer, the youngest son, lives in the west.
"William (Billy) Williams first married Josie Ambrose, and had three children, Willie, Carl, and Ralph. He married the second time Miss Margaret Clark of VA. Their children were Mamie, Francis, Clara, Ray, and Roberta.
"Wiley Williams married Joan Ellis and lived at the old Rufus Kidwell place, north of the power plant. Later he lived on east Main Street. He removed to Kansas. Children of Wiley Williams were Margaret, Adeline and Joe."

In a letter from Ralph O. Williams to Duane Patrick Flowers (copied from
http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~va4d-flwr/roots/i1253nt.htm on 4/12/04):

"I have been told by two different descendants, that Ezekiel Williams came to Tennessee from Virginia...I cannot place him in Tennessee prior to 1802 when he was married.  The stories are that he killed some slaves in Virginia, fled, changed his name from Hartman to Williams and came to Tennessee."

Mrs. Smith, who lives in the house next to the Ezekiel Williams cemetery, related in early 2004, that previous visitors to the cemetery have told her that Ezekiel settled in Tennessee with his two sisters because he was "running from the law", having killed a black man.

Much of the information about the children of Ezekiel Williams came from the website of Ken Mullins (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kenmullins/).

Notes for MARY "POLLY" MCDONALD:

     Conflicting birth years:

Polly's gravestone says "Mary Williams, Consort of Ezekiel Williams", and gives her age at death as 68 years, 2 months, 11 days, which would place her birth year in 1791.  The Randal McDonald website (http://www.angelfire.com/al2/McCalebs/Randal_McDonald3.htm on 4/13/04) gives her year of birth as 1775.  Ken Mullens' website gives her year of birth as 1784 in Virginia.  The birth year of 1791 would have made her too young to have given birth to James C. in 1802.

Hamblen County, TN wills, p. 54-55:
Last Will and Testament of Alexander Williams

May 17th day 1876

I, Alexander Williams, being of sound mind and memory do this day make my last will and testament for the purposes hereafter mentioned.
First, I will that after my death that my body be buried in a plain decent manner and that my burial expenses with my just debts be paid and my soul return to God who gave it.
Second, my will and desire by this is that all my children join equal and alike.
Now I will state how the [??] is now and what I desire hereafter.
They have all received equal in stocks, household and kitchen furniture [??] but other ways they are not.  Ezekiel Williams, Wilia Williams, Gideon Williams these three has received five hundred dollars a piece in land or money for that purpose.  In lieu of this I will to my daughter Cate McGee all the land I own East of Gideon Williams' farm.
Also I will to Josiah Williams the north side of the farm that I now live on the side where he now lives the line to begin at the west corner of said farm at a stake g[??] and hickory.  Also Thompson's corner thence South with Thompson's line forty seven poles to a stake thence a strait line Eastward passing three persimmon at the creek at lower end of the meadow tract so strait on to Wesley Doggell's line, thence with the lines on the North side of said lands to the beginning.  Now for this land Josiah is to pay one thousand dollars at the end of ten years.  Five hundred dollars to be paid to the Estate, the other five hundred to be paid to the heirs of my daughter Molly C. Noe dec'd, Hannah Noe and Wilia E. Noe, to be paid to them two hundred and fifty dollars each when they become twenty-one years of age, if one or both should not live to that age pay that part to my estate.
I also bequeath to my grandson Robert A. Noe the son of my daughter Nancy M. Noe dec'd the sum of three hundred dollars first money paid out of my estate.
Now the South side of said farm where I now live is to belong to my wife Hannah Williams so long as she lives or remains a widow.  At her death or if she marries it is to belong to my daughter Addy Williams, though she is to pay one thousand dollars in two years to my estate.
Now if Addy wants it different, sell the land at highest bidder on twelve month [??] and of that sum she is to have five hundred dollars, the remainder belongs to my estate.
This places my heirs all equal, Ezekiel, Wilia, William, Josiah, Gideon, Nancy, Mollie, Cate, and Addy all having received five hundred dollars in land or money and also stock and household and kitchen furniture, then what money paid back to my estate and all that I have on hand to be equally divided with my heirs except fifty dollars with all the stock and household and kitchen furniture with all the grain and farming utensils which she wishes to keep this she is to have during her natural life.
