There is no such thing as a neutral educational process. Education
either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate the integration
of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring
about conformity to it, or it becomes the practice of freedom - the
means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with their
reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their
world.
—Paulo
Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Because
I believe that education should be a “practice of freedom,”
this class has been designed to support the critical and creative development
of my students and enable them to engage with the curriculum in a way
that is both meaningful and productive. I do not assume that my students
come to me empty handed, but rather that they come with their own valuable
experiences and world views and simply need opportunities for practice
and further development.
Course Objectives
-
To engage with literature in a variety of ways that allow the students
to develop a deeper appreciation for the written and spoken word,
an increased understanding of the complex world in which we live,
and to enhance and challenge the student's own developing intellect.
- To
develop and enhance reading, writing, and oral communication skills
as a means of ensuring academic and personal success.
- To
develop the critical thinking, reading, and viewing skills necessary
to evaluate arguments, expert opinion, cause and effect reasoning,
bias, prejudice, and various persuasive techniques.
