SHATTERCONES FROM KENTLAND, INDIANA

Roughly 90 millions years ago glaciers filled in an old impact crater, leaving behind huge lime- stone boulders, and identifying its central region.  Further evidence to the celestial origin of this structure exists in not only the presence of shatter cones, but coesite and stishovite along with shattered breccia.  Near the beginning of the 20th century, the jumbled structure became a limestone quarry.  Here and there a shattercone can be found by the trained eye. Flipped and re-oriented strata testify to the explosive nature of the impact.
