Dear friends and family, Subject: Contentment-02/12/04
Hello from Western Uganda!  I must say that the time change is one of the hardest things to get use to here.  It is currently 9:45pm here and 1:45pm there!  It has taken my body a while to get use to this dramatic change. Life here has become more and more interesting over the past few weeks. I am starting to feel like I am living on a farm. The roosters wake me up in the mornings and on my way to school I walk by several cattle and goats on the side of the road. Some of you may be able to relate to what I am  experiencing. I started school this past week and have  felt that at least one thing is familiar to me. It is very challenging because I am teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. The children are in different places which makes thinking for them difficult at times.  I am also attempting to get use to the schedule. I am not use to not having discipline problems within a classroom setting!  I am thanking God for their(children) great behavior and listening skills.
Thank you for your prayers during this past week of transitioning into a new teaching position. One other intersting thing happened at school this week. I had a student drop his shoe down the choe(outside toilet) one morning during school. We turned it into a Science experiment for the rest of the children. We had to tie several sticks together and attempt to fish the shoe out of a 25ft. deep hole in the ground.  After an exhausting hour some of the Babwisi men were successful!!  Thank goodness they new what they were doing because I had no clue.  The shoe once retrieved was immediately thrown into a bag for cleaning. As you can all see life here can be rather exciting at times.  I am continuing to study the language and interact with the people more often. I have become brave enough to greet without being greeted first.  I feel this is a big step for me. Learning a new language has never been easy for me.

I have been attending the local church here on Sundays and have found it very difficult and frustrating at times.  I can't understand anything, however the singing is great.  They sing many songs that we sing in church at home.  Usually it is accompanied by drums and shakers.  I can't understand it, but I can feel the spirit moving! God has been teaching me about being content.  I have found that my contentment has been based on material things and people.  I have found myself unhappy at times because my focus is on trying to figure out what things can make me happy.  Everything I think of has to do with Charlotte, my friends, and my family.  I am reading The True Vine by Andrew Murray and I read something that spoke truth to my heart today.   As churches and individuals, we are in danger of desiring self-contentment more than we are of anything else. I feel that I do desire self-contentment most of the time.  I am praying that I will find my contentment in Christ and know how it feels to be content in every circumstance (Phil 4:11-13). I am asking that you will pray this for me in this journey that God has called me to. I do not want to focus on my own happiness apart from the Gospel.  I want to know what role the Gospel specifically plays in my happiness.
I will write again soon to let you know how I am doing and what I am learning. This experience so far has been like a consuming fire.  It is hard, but I know that God will carry me through.  Thank you all for your support and continuous prayers!!
                       Prayer Requests:
 1. Find contentment in Christ alone.
 2. Bundibugyo would begin to feel more like a home to me.
 3. Being away from family and friends.
 4. Intimate time with God in the mornings.
 5. Building relationships with teammates.
 6. Discernment in what to teach the children.
 7. I would be free from feeling homesick.
 8. I would love those around me and allow them to love me.

Dear friends and family,  Subject: Bundibugyo Update:02/05/04
Greetings from Western Uganda. Life here has been very overwhelming the past couple of weeks. I have been learning a new language, meeting new people, and attempting to settle into my room. Thank you for praying for my luggage. It arrived safely in my hands last Friday!! It was almost like Christmas! I had forgotten what I had packed. I have been in Kampala(capital) for the past week getting groceries and meeting teammates. It was quite relaxing, but still overwhelming.

Our drive to Kampala was great. It takes about 7 hours to get there because the roads are in horrible condition. Most of the roads in Uganda are made of clay and rock.
Needless to say it was very bumpy and dusty. I had the opportunity to see some of the country and that was great!! I ended up flying back from Kampala on Thursday and shifting gears from city life to rural country life. It has been very hot here the past few days. I have been drinking a lot of water and attempting to stay in the shade if at all possible.

Friday I spent the day with some of my teammates and their children at Semuliki National Park. It is a huge nature reserve about an hour away from Bundibugyo. We hiked through the rain forrest to see the hot springs. It was an interesting experience for me. I saw a few monkeys and exotic birds. The springs were amazing. We took some eggs with us and boiled them in the hot springs. They were very yummy!!! I have a few pictures I will send so you can see a little of what I experienced.
School will be starting here Monday. Please pray for me while I am preparing to teach children that I do not know. I will also be using curriculum that is new. I am feeling a little pressed for time. I am sending some pictures of Bundibugyo and the Hot Springs. I hope that you enjoy the view!! I will send more later!!
Prayer requests:
1. Wisdom in teaching the children here.
2. Preparation and learing a new curriculum.
3. Missing friends and family.
4. Building relationships with teammates.
5. Living verses surviving. I would like to be able to look back at this time in my life with no regret.
6. Motivation to spend time with God regularly.
7. Looking for something to study for daily devotions (advise welcomed).
8. Safe travel for Jennifer, Scott, and their children to Kenya for a medical conference.
9. Transition- I will be living with families for the next three weeks.
10. Believe God's truth and dismiss lies!!
Thank you for your prayers and encouraging emails!! I love getting email so feel free to send some when you can!! I will update you again soon!!
Enjoy  the pictures!
