The Database

News, Rumors and Information

Internet Movie Database
One of the best film resources on the Net.  Find news, staff, quotes and just about everything here.  Information is somewhat unreliable on upcoming releases due to reliance on user submissions.

VideoETA
A great site for finding out when movies will be coming out on video and DVD.  VideoETA does not sell the films itself, but just lists the information. (you may want to check out The Marketplace below for plenty of sites to buy the films from)
VideoETA New This Week

Variety
The trade of Hollywood.  A must read for professionals. (subscription required for most content)

Hollywood Reporter
Excellent trade for hollywood films.  (subscription required for some content)

New York Times/Movies
New York's major paper and an excellent source for movie news.

The Globe, The Herald, The Phoenix
The Boston Papers: The serious (Boston Globe), the tabloid (Boston Herald) and the Alternative weekly (the Boston Phoenix).

Scifiwire
The news service of the Scifi channel.  Surprisingly accurate scoops on fantasy/horror and science fiction films.

Cinescape
The online version of the magazine.  Great info and reviews.

Dark Horizons
A collection of news and rumors from the US, UK and Australia.

Aint it Cool News
Probably the premier rumor site.  Great place to find upcoming cult classics and interesting foreign films.  Check out the Talkbacks for the Net's largest collection of hot air (although if you look hard enough there are some gems in there too).

Greg's Previews
Part of Yahoo's Movie news this is an excellent source on movies that are in the works.

Rotten Tomatoes
A collection of movie reviews distilled into one site's rankings.  Decent information and a great research tool to see how a movie is faring among the critics.

Anime on DVD
Excellent place for finding out information on Anime, conventions (including heavy Anime Boston coverage) and animation releases.

DVDfile
A nice site with info on DVDs, release schedules and behind-the-scenes articles.

Horror.com
A strong information site about, surprisingly enough, horror films and titles.

Badmovies.org
A great fun site discussing some of the worst films around.  Includes the highly amusing "Things I learned from this film" lists, such as "The Pentagon uses screen doors" from Angry Red Planet.

Xavier Morales's site.

Dr. MovieMovie
Wes Bennet's site.

Trailers

Quicktime
One of the best places on the Net to find and watch movie trailers

Yahoo
If it's not on Quicktime, it's probably here.  Also a good place for news and rumors.

Internet Short Films

Want to watch a film?  Here are a few of the sites hosting short films for streaming.
Ifilm
The big boy of internet films. (some content by subscription)

Atomfilms
Second only to Ifilm, this also houses a considerable amount of Shockwave films.

Urban Chillers
A UK site based on horror films, especially with a urban/modern theme.

Studentfilms
A collection of student films from across the world.

Undergroundfilm.org
A collection of strange, oddball and strangely compelling films. (including Attack of the Hot Dog People!)

The Force.net
The site for the Star Wars fan films.

Exposure
The site for Scifi channel's, now defunct, short film series.  While the show is gone the site is still up and running.  A solid collection of short films.

Newbury Comics
While the comics section has been shrinking, Newbury has a strong selection of DVDs, especially used discs.
newburycomics.com for a wicked good time!

Best Buy
The big boy on the block, very large selection at low prices.  Suffers a bit on indy and foreign film selection
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/serve?bfmid=30991737&siteid=41145622&bfpage=foxdvdpromoFox DVDs: 2 for $25

Sundance Online Film Festival
The 2005 Sundance Film Festival has begun and they are presenting 33 of the short films from the festival online for free. The films will be hosted online until June.  (the actual festival ends January 30)

Boston Film Festival
The big festival of the year.  Has big names, hollywood films, indies and documentaries.  This is the place to go see all the 'soon-to-be Oscar nominees" for the Foreign Language and Documentary sections.  The Boston Film Festival has shown movies such as Secretary, Brotherhood of the Wolf, No Man's Land and Fog of War well before they're wide releases.

Boston Independent Film Festival
The indie festival put together by the Independent Film Society of Boston.

Boston Underground Film Festival
A festival of the truly wierd and silly.  Quite a bit of fun actually...

SunDeis Festival
A smaller festival celebrating the student film, includes showings and workshops.

AnimeBoston
A young but surprisingly successful convention discussing japanese animation (Anime) as well as animation from other parts of the world (including the rest of Asia and America)

Boston Science Fiction Film Festival
Playing at the Somerville Theatre this annual fest showcases 24 hours of films: classic, new, shorts, indy and blockbusters.  How else would you want to spend a weekend?

The Marketplace

Movies for Sale

Amazon
The big boy for online stores.  Has a very good DVD/VHS section.  Great for mainstream titles and new releases.  Not quite as good at independent films, does not carry adult titles.
