The Author

Professor Mendenhall graduated from Midland College, Fremont, Nebraska in 1936, and from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1938. In 1947 he received a Ph.D. degree from John Hopkins University, where also he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society. In 1950 he was President of the Middle West Branch of the American Oriental Society. At present he is Associate Professor of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan and Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Oriental Society.
