The Nannie Seddon Barney Chapter #23, Children of the Confederacy and Fredericksburg Chapter #163 of the United Daughters
of the Confederacy announces the topics for the Virginia Division Historical Essay Program. The contest is open to all
public, private, and home schooled students.
The 2008 Essay topics are:
1st-3rd Grades: The Davis Children
and their pets 4th-6th Grades: Who was Jefferson F. Davis? 7th-9th Grades: Homes of Jefferson F. Davis 10-12th Grades:
Military Career of Jefferson F. Davis
The Virginia Division will offer monetary first place awards in each age
group category. Second and Third place winners will receive a Certificate of Appreciation.
In addition,
there is a contest for Confederate Artwork. Artwork may be done in any medium.
The following rules must be followed.
Entries MUST be postmarked by May 1, 2008 to be considered. Essays must be handwritten or typed neatly
on 8 1/2" x 11" paper. There is no word limit. Use "War Between The States" rather than 'Civil War' unless
quoting from a source. Footnotes or endnotes must be used for all references where needed. List bibliography,
i.e., books read to learn about the essay topic. Keep a copy of your essay. Sign essay and artwork with
a FICTITIOUS name. Attach an envelope with the fictitious name and grade in school on the outside of the envelope.
On the inside of the envelope should be a card with your real name, address, name
of classroom teacher or school contact, name and address of school.
Essays entries and artwork will
not be returned. They will be retained in Virginia Division UDC files
