February 18, 2003 Session Report by DaveO

Well, one last game night before I start work again.  I must say, I'm really gonna miss this slacking thing; I was hoping things were gonna go out with a bang - tonight didn't disappoint.  As usual, Matty and I started with a couple two player games, then TT showed up, and finally Linda got out of her class to make it a foursome.

One on One Hoops

How can I say goodbye to the non-working world without a nice game of One on One with Matthias.  A lot of people have been asking where they can get this game; if you go over to Boulder Games (found on this site's links list) you'll find it there for a mere pittance.  Go get a case of beer and this game and start talking trash!  Now!  I kicked Matty's ass all over the court this time...Final Score - DaveO-110; Matthias-94

Jekyll and Hyde Mystery Rummy

This was one of the first games Matthias and I ever played when I first moved down to Orange County.  He suggested we give it another run for old times sake; we were in the middle of the 3rd round when Tim showed up and I was winning 65 to 64.  Matty and I decided that this would be our final round.  Well, we ended up going through the deck twice (something I'd never done before) so noone scored for that round and the game ended up 65-64.  Very anticlimactic finish...

Gold Connection

Well, with the High Roller here, I knew I had to show him a new dice game so I brought out Sid Sackson's Gold Connection.  I bought this one a long time ago, back when my game collection sickness first started about 4 years ago and I actually hadn't tried it in about 3 years.  Well, we had a good time with it.  As someone aptly described it, this is Can't Stop with teeth.  You have the risk element of Can't Stop but there are a lot of ways you can screw over your opponents making this a fun and nasty game!  Matthias couldn't be stopped in this one and he ran away (he had 20 bonus pts!).  Final Scores: Matthias-84; DaveO-40; TimmyT-31

Twins

Knowing that Linda was mere minutes away, I tried to find a game that I could teach and play really fast.  I settled on this obscure one from the Man, Reiner Knizia.  This is an interesting little poker-type game that's quite fun when you first play it but I had a feeling it was better with more (it handles up to 6 players);   regardless, we pushed on just to get a feel of it.  In the end, my thinking proved correct - it wasn't as much fun with less people, but we still had a good time.  Final Scores: Matthias-31; TT-5; DaveO-0

Puerto Rico

Having played this one for the first time last week, Linda was hooked on it and insisted we play tonight.  I taught Matt the rules before everyone showed up and we got it on.  It was a good battle in this low scoring affair, but I can't seem to get out of my Puerto Rico funk.  Linda's caught on to this one real fast though as the final score shows:

                           Matt    TT   Linda  DaveO

Victory Chips       10        7       8           8
Building Pts          11       17     17         12
Bonus Pts              -         6      10           -
Total                   30        21    35         20

Basari

In one of the rarer gaming moments, everyone agreed on what to play for the final game of the evening.  I adopted TimmyT's strategy from last time and managed to get housed as well (although I still finished ahead of Tim, who adopted a totally new, equally fallible strategy:*) while Matt went back to his winning ways. Final Scores: Matt - 83; Linda-75; DaveO-66; TT-55
